A new adult patient care tower is one of several major projects aimed at transforming University of Iowa Health Care’s ability to care for Iowans in future decades and generations. Here’s an update on several projects now underway on the west side of campus that will enable the tower to be built.

Kaveh Akbar, associate professor and director of the undergraduate English and creative writing major, and two Iowa graduates, m.s. RedCherries and Deborah Jackson Taffa, have been named National Book Award finalists. Their work is included in the fiction, poetry, and nonfiction categories. Winners will be announced in November.

Tracy Kidder, an Iowa Writers’ Workshop alum and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Soul of the New Machine, will soon return to his alma mater. Kidder will take part in a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Iowa Memorial Union as part of the Iowa City Book Festival. Kidder shared more about his work in this interview.

Fifteen years ago, John Luther Adams premiered Inuksuit, designed to be performed outdoors with many percussionists to explore the sound of a place. The unique performance will take place in Iowa City at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, with more than 100 percussionists throughout City Park and along the banks of the Iowa River. The event, which is part of renowned percussionist Steven Schick’s residency at Iowa, is free to the public.

Hawkeye fans can get an up-close look at their favorite teams at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at the “Hawkeyes from Downtown” event, which will feature Iowa women’s wrestling and men’s and women’s basketball teams. The free event will take place at Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue and will feature fan contests, prizes, music, and a Q&A.
