"156 Years in June"

From Liz Tovar:

In the last couple of years, I have been asked more and more what “Juneteenth” is and what it means to our university. It always gives me pause to answer this question, not because the question is being asked or that folks may not understand the significance of this day.

I pause because it makes me reflect on one word: progress.

Many people are still learning about the history of our country, and to me, this is a good thing. Just as more people know of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, people learn more about June 19, 1865. I don’t take the stance of “why don’t you already know,” but rather, “let me help you understand.” It is progress when people want to learn from our past.

June Note from Liz

Liz Tovar

June at the University of Iowa is about planning and celebrating. We are deep into preparations for the total return of our students, faculty, and staff to campus this fall. There is a renewed energy of acceptance, where our university community is eager to grow our understanding of free speech, diversity, equity, and inclusion to accept all.

We celebrate #Pride2021 in the community and online. Watch our social media channels @DiversityUI on Twitter, @uiowadei on Instagram, @DiversityUI on Facebook, and our LinkedIn page. We are telling the stories of our community's LGBTQ+ history. While we will focus on our LGBTQ+ history this month and highlight UI Pride Week this October.

We will also celebrate and honor Juneteenth later this month. Stay tuned to diversity.uiowa.edu for some unique stories looking at the significance of this day in our nation's history.
