College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

The Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) is in Waterloo on October 13-14, less than a month away. Since IMOM started in 2008, the college has played an important role in supporting this important work. IMOM is an opportunity for our students to get patient experiences, see other dentists from across Iowa in action, and most importantly to improve the oral health of those they treat. It is a valuable and rewarding experience for our students. That experience is possible because of our faculty (including our adjunct faculty) and residents who volunteer their time and expertise to supervise our dental students. Your efforts go a long way toward meeting the needs of some of Iowa's most underserved people. Students, faculty, residents, and alumni, I hope that you will join the college at IMOM by signing up to be a volunteer. Your work helps Iowa become a little bit better for some of those who need it most. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Thank you, alumni!

It was great seeing alumni from class years ending in 3s and 8s return to Iowa City for our annual alumni reunion. The events began with a great reception dinner on Friday night and continued Saturday with a pregame social and watch party. Some photos are available via Facebook and Instagram. We are already looking forward to next year's reunion for class years ending in 4s and 9s and are tentatively scheduled to host the weekend of Sept. 14, 2024. A formal Save the Date will follow early next year.

Why Iowa: Clinical experience

Early patient experiences, including for first-year dental students, and Iowa's combined clerkship and comprehensive care approach to dental education helps Iowa rank among the top schools in amount of clinical experiences.

Check mark

Kudos to you!

Istaque Ahmed's Five Star Review: "Me and my wife had dental treatment from this clinic. And our experience was excellent. We went there for deep cleaning service. But they also took care of other needs at the same time. There initial treatment procedure is a little lengthy and the appointments are not readily available. But they take time to make sure everything is perfect. All the staff and students were very friendly and polite. They took care of us like they are taking care of themselves. Experienced teachers were always there along with the students when needed. I don't think any professional dentist would give us the service same level as they did. I will highly recommend them if anybody needs any dental treatment. And if I need any service, I will definitely visit them again."

Research

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Leo Marchini has been working with researchers around the world to validate an instrument to assess ageism among dental students. This study validates their ageism scale for dental students in India. The aim of this work is to identify ageism, often a reflection of societial biases, among dental students so that curricular changes can be proposed and adopted that would address these biases. Doing so can improve oral health care for older adults.

Aciscol Bravo Guevera

Hawkeye history: First Latinx Dental Graduate

In 1913, the University of Iowa College of Dentistry had our first Latinx graduate. Aciscol Bravo Guevera was from Puerto Rico, and he returned to pursue dentistry in Puerto Rico after he graduated. Guevera was one of 6 graduates that year who went "beyond the boundaries of the state" when he went back to "Porto Rico" according to the 1913 Iowa Alumnus, the alumni magazine for the University of Iowa at the time.
