The University of Iowa has named professors Saba Rasheed Ali and Paul A. Romitti as recipients of the 2025 UI Distinguished Chair, honoring their remarkable scholarship, teaching, and service. Ali, an internationally recognized scholar in career development and counseling psychology, and Romitti, world-renowned for his work in public health surveillance of congenital and inherited disorders, join a select group of UI faculty that has made a significant impact in their fields and at the university.

Three UI faculty members — Kaveh Akbar, Jamel Brinkley, and Charles D’Ambrosio — were recognized with 2025 Awards in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The awards honor the work of both emerging and established writers and will be presented to awardees at a ceremony in May.

Daniel Khalastchi, director of the Magid Center for Writing, was awarded the National Jewish Book Award’s Berru Poetry Award for his book, The Story of Your Obstinate Survival. The awards are given by the Jewish Book Council, which worked with more than 120 judges to consider more than 700 submissions.

The University of Iowa will close the Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity (DAOD) on March 27, following direction from the Iowa Board of Regents. This action will ensure the university is in compliance with state and federal laws as well as recent changes to accreditation requirements across numerous disciplines.

Funding appropriations for most federal agencies are set to expire at midnight on Friday, March 14. If Congress does not pass new spending legislation, a federal shutdown will occur. The university is monitoring the situation closely and will post updates on the Federal Updates 2025 page.

March 24–28 is Severe Weather Awareness Week, making it a good time to make sure you are prepared for an emergency scenario. A Hawk Alert test will take place on Wednesday, March 26, and you will also receive an email about what to do during a tornado or wind emergency.

From an early age, many of us are taught that resilience means holding back tears and pushing forward. But crying isn’t a failure. It isn’t a weakness. What can be helpful is to understand the emotions behind why you are crying and to identify what you need to move forward in the moment.

Ahead of the TRACERS mission launch this spring, the UI Department of Physics and Astronomy wanted to find a student to build a Lego model of the mission satellites to give to those who worked on the project. Ava Reed, a second-year student in the College of Engineering, took up the challenge of designing and constructing the model.

Congratulations to the Iowa women’s wrestling team and coaching staff on an incredible season! Iowa won the team title at the 2025 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Tournament on March 8, earning back-to-back championships in their first two seasons. In addition, three Hawkeyes were crowned individual champions, and 15 were named All-Americans.

Wednesday, March 26, is One Day for Iowa, the University of Iowa’s 24-hour online giving day that is a great way to say thank you to the programs and departments that made an impact on your life. All donations made in March count toward the One Day for Iowa total.

- Shaun Vecera receives Lola Lopes Award: Shaun Vecera, director of the UI Honors Program and professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, has been awarded the 2025 Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy. The award recognizes work supporting and advocating for undergraduate education.
- Donate needed items to Staff Council food drive: Staff Council is hosting its annual food drive for the Food Pantry at Iowa now through Thursday, March 27. Consider donating nonperishable food items, as well as toiletries and hygiene products. View a list of drop-off locations.
- Note these Cambus schedule changes during spring break: Cambus will operate on an alternate schedule from March 15–22. Service will be reduced on some routes, and service after 8:45 p.m. will be provided by the On-Demand Shuttle. There will be no service on March 15, 16, or 22.
- Cambus adds service to UI Health Care Medical Center North Liberty: Beginning Monday, April 28, Cambus will add service to the UI Health Care Medical Center North Liberty. Service will connect the Health Sciences Interchange, Research Park Campus, and the North Liberty Campus, as well as offer routes from the UI campus to North Liberty.
