A Japanese dental materials and equipment manufacturer awarded Akimasa Tsujimoto, associate professor of Operative Dentistry, an $18,000 grant for his project evaluating the bonding performance of newly developed self-adhesive resin luting cement which can be used with or without a universal adhesive to various substrates. The aim is to determine whether this resin luting cement can improve the durability of dental esthetic restorations.

Two More Dental Alumni Speak Out on Medicaid Reimbursement for Dentists

Last week, we highlighted how two alumni, Iowa Dental Association President Zach Kouri ('03 DDS) and Mike Stufflebeam ('00 DDS, '02 Ped) were advocating publicly on the need to increase the reimbursement rate for Medicaid dental services. This past week, two other alumni added their voices to the mix. Sara Stuefen ('10 DDS) spoke about the choice before Iowa: "We can either continue to underfund the dental Medicaid program, leading to fewer and fewer options for patients on Medicaid to seek care, or adequately fund the program to ensure that low-income Iowans find a local dental home where their oral health can be maintained." Brian Kim ('13 DDS) spoke about the consequences of inaction: "The current system will result in more patients seeking emergency treatment in the emergency room, which is ill-suited for treating dental emergencies. These are emergencies that could be prevented and treated more efficiently, at a lower cost to patients and taxpayers, if the patient could establish a dental home with a local provider."
