Refugees and Immigrants: How Their Stories and Experiences Inform Public Policy

Wednesday, May 4, 2022 / 12-2pm / Zoom
Final event in the Iowa Foreign Relations Council series on refugees and immigrants
Speakers: Art Cullen (Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and editor of The Storm Lake Times), Cristina Ortiz (assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Minnesota-Morris), Caleb Knutson (senior planner for Mid-Iowa Planning Alliance), and Cara McFerren (West Liberty city councilor).

This panel will showcase the efforts of business and community leaders in towns such as Columbus Junction, Marshalltown, Storm Lake, and West Liberty, who are striving to create a thriving inclusiveness for this new diversity, precipitated by the arrival of refugee and immigrant populations. They will share what has gone well in their respective towns, the difficulties they have overcome, and the challenges each continues to face. Panelists will also offer their views on how policymakers in Des Moines might look to Iowa's most diverse towns to help create new welcoming and inclusive policies to support the state’s growing reputation as a place refugees and immigrants seek to call home.

Upcoming Events

Anne Frank Tree Planting Ceremony

Friday, April 29, 2022, 5:00 p.m.
On April 29, 2022, a new tree will be planted on the University of Iowa’s Pentacrest—a sapling propagated from the immense horse chestnut tree that grew in the courtyard behind the annex where Anne Frank and her family hid for 761 days during World War II. This living symbol of Anne’s spirit and humanitarian message is the 13th Anne Frank Sapling to be planted in the United States. We encourage you to register so that we can approximate the number of attendees. Attendees should gather on the Pentacrest lawn outside of Macbride Hall. In case of rain, we will meet in Macbride Auditorium. For details, visit the Planting Ceremony webpage.
