Azeez Butali

Azeez Butali Featured in AADOCR Spotlight

The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) has been conducting member spotlight interviews, and the AADOCR has highlighted several Iowa-affiliated faculty and staff members. Over the next several weeks, the DSB Weekly will highlight these spotlights. The first is of Azeez Butali, professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine. An excerpt is below.

AADOCR: You are a mentor for the 2021-22 class of the AADOCR Mentoring an Inclusive Network for a Diverse Workforce of the Future (AADOCR MIND the Future). Thank you for volunteering your time! What motived you to be a mentor for this program?

Butali: "I am a beneficiary of great mentorship myself. Peter Mossey and Jeff Murray were wonderful mentors, and I still have relationships with them today. So for me, it was the beauty of the responsibility to pay it forward.

Apart from looking out for underrepresented minorities, my lab has also been open to students from different backgrounds. When the opportunity came to put myself forward to be an AADOCR Mind the Future mentor, I didn't hesitate because for me, it was the payback time. I have benefited and I'm still benefiting, and I still have mentors myself."

Pediatric Dental Student Club Receives SMILE WISH

The Pediatric Dental Student Club was one of the twelve “SMILE WISH” recipients who were recently awarded $1,000 from the Crest and America’s Toothfairy organizations. The money will be used to support coordinated efforts with the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) of Johnson County to provide oral hygiene supplies and dental treatment for children and parents who are struggling to find a safe home life. The student club’s advisor, Cathy Skotowski, clinical associate professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, applied for and was notified they received the grant as part of a national campaign during Crest’s 12 days of Crest Smiles in December. Fourth-year dental student, Emily Starman, and second-year dental student Kylie Krier, who are both members of the Pediatric Dental Student Club are shown with Skotowski.
