Iowa Law's expanding environmental law program | Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Supported by the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative since 2022, Iowa Law has been able to expand its environmental law program by supporting collaborative research, innovative course offerings, and professional opportunities for students. We are pleased to have the opportunity to build on the College of Law’s long history in environmental, energy, and natural resources law.

Warmly, Shannon Roesler Charlotte and Frederick Hubbell Professor of Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Faculty Director of the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative | | $6 million Iowa grant funds research | | | A five-year, $6 million project funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce and NOAA aims to improve climate resilience in the Central Midwest. It will create a new regional team within NOAA’s Climate Adaptation Partnerships network, focusing on Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. | | “This funding mechanism is unique. Our goal is to put the considerable scientific resources of our academic institutions to work for the region’s tribal nations and women landowners and expand over time to include more community partners,” Lead project PI Brandi Janssen of UI College of Public Health.
HELI looks forward to collaborating with the center on climate resilience in the Midwest. | | Expanding academic opportunities | | | The interdisciplinary intersession course Wildlife and Habitat Conservation Law is the first of its kind at the University of Iowa. The goal is to introduce law students to the law of species and habitat protection, focusing on animals and plants located in natural spaces around the University of Iowa. | | This past summer, the College of Law was admitted as a Constituent Law School of the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law (FNREL). Iowa Law is one of only 35 law schools in the country to earn this designation. We are excited to strengthen our programs with the resources this designation provides. | | Supporting student success at Iowa Law | | | Thanks to a HELI stipend to support his work at the Department of Justice's Environment and Natural Resources Division, Jonathan Picado was able to leverage his legal education, putting him at the forefront of advocacy informed by both the law and science. | | The Hubbell Award for Excellence in Environmental Law is awarded to a student who has made an outstanding contribution or demonstrated a commitment to the field of environmental, natural resources, and energy law while at Iowa Law. | | Building on Iowa Law's legacy | | | The College of Law’s history in the field of natural resources, energy, and environmental law is almost as long as the history of the state itself, given the importance of natural resources to the state economy and the livelihood of its people. | | HELI stipends have enabled students to gain experience to practice environmental law.
