Staff Spotlight: Duane Staskal

Braving the Cold. On a Bicycle!

When many of the most determined cyclists park their bikes for the winter, Duane Staskal is still riding. Duane has been cycling recreationally since 1992 and has also been commuting to work by bike since joining the University of Iowa in 2007. Winter is no different.

“I try to take a bike over a car whenever possible,” Duane says. “I think some people question whether or not I actually have a driver’s license.”

February is Black History Month

Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month, is celebrated each February in the United States. We take this time to celebrate the achievements of Black Americans and honor the significant role and impact they have made on all facets of life and society throughout U.S. history. The University of Iowa's theme for 2022 is UBUNTU: I am Because You Are. Several groups have worked together to create a full calendar of events to celebrate. These groups are the Hawks of Color, the UI Center for Human Rights, the Multicultural & International Student Support & Engagement group, and the College of Law. Check out the events calendar to learn more

Individual and Team Nominations sought for the spring 2022 I.O.W.A. (Improving Our Workplace Awards)

Staff Council sponsors this campus-wide award. Nominations are being accepted through March 15, 2022. The I.O.W.A. was introduced in 1998 to celebrate individuals and teams of university employees who have made a significant positive impact on how our work gets done. Nominations are reviewed by a committee from across campus and must meet three of the four following criteria: initiative, innovation, measurable results, and sustaining impact.

For a nomination form and further information, please visit our website.

Join us for the UISC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Celebration

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.” The UISC DEI Committee acknowledges the problematic history surrounding Gandhi and at the same time, supports the work towards unity. We we look forward to celebrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on campus and those efforts of all who work tirelessly answering that test by making our campus and community the best it can be. Although there is still so much work to do, it is necessary to take a step back and reflect on all of our accomplishments and celebrate how far we have come. Please join the UI Staff Council DEI Committee and esteemed members of the University of Iowa and UIHC DEI community for this special (virtual) event to celebrate all that has been achieved and all that we can still do!

Serving with Santa

Staff Councilors Becky Keogh and Brett Cloyd volunteered this winter at Brunch with Santa held in Hancher Auditorium’s Stanley Café. The event provided an opportunity for kids and their families to meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus and enjoy some sweet eats. Staff Councilors had the opportunity to write letters to kids (from Santa!) that were opened during the event.
