College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Not only is it Labor Day weekend, but the first Hawkeye football game of the year is tomorrow. As you enjoy the holiday weekend with friends and family, know that I appreciate our Hawkeye community. As I said to many of you over the last sixteen months, many things have changed in the college, but the character of our Hawkeye community and our common commitment to serving others and one another has remained strong. Let's remember that during this holiday weekend, Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Dentistry celebrates T90/R90 grant renewal

On August 30, Iowa Dentistry hosted a grant celebration for the renewal of the T90/R90 grant for another five years. Led by Steven Levy, the Wright-Bush-Shreves Endowed Professor of Research, the training grant supports nine trainees per year and is the primary funding mechanism for supporting Iowa PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. Daphne Hoefler

IDA Scholarship Profile: Daphne Hoefler

The Iowa Dental Foundation (IDF) awarded six scholarships this year, including three scholarships to dental students at Iowa Dentistry. Learn about dental student Daphne Hoefler and what receiving the scholarship means to her.

"I am from the small town of Mechanicsville, Iowa. I knew I always wanted a career in healthcare, and I quickly learned that dentistry was right for me. Through being involved in various activities at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, I have gained experience and skills that I hope to carry with me as I move forward in my career after graduation. Dental school has also given me the opportunity to create relationships with my patients and build long-lasting friendships with my classmates. I am looking forward to starting my fourth year as a dental student to continue developing these relationships and skills. I am very grateful to the Iowa Dental Foundation for awarding me this scholarship as it will help lower some of the financial burden of paying for dental school."

IMOM

Meaningful experiences at IMOM

Testimonial from Kecia Leary, associate dean of clinics, on one of her most memorable experiences at IMOM:

"I once worked with a dental assistant who was looking for a dentist to assist.  It was my first year volunteering at IMOM and she hadn’t worked a ton with pediatric patients, but she seemed like she was interested and up to the task.  Turns out she wanted to be a dentist when she finished school so we worked together as Doctor/Assistant while she was in undergrad and then her first two years of dental school, now we get to work together as colleagues." ~Kecia Leary

Research

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Krongbaramee T, Wongpattaraworakul W, Lanzel EA, Hellstein JW, Teixeira FB. Retrospective Evaluation of Periradicular Biopsies: An 18-Year Study. J Endod. 2023 Aug 4:S0099-2399(23)00467-3. doi: 10.1016/j.joen.2023.07.023. PMID: 37543187.

In a retrospective study at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, the researchers aimed to identify the incidence rate of various pathologic entities in the periapical region around the roots of teeth. Although most lesions in this region are related to apical periodontitis, which is treated by endodontic therapy, this study found that around 8% of lesions around the roots of teeth were not endodontic in origin. In radiographs and clinical evaluation, these lesions may look similar to traditional endodontic lesions. This complicates diagnosis, and indicates that histologic investigations are required for a definitive diagnosis for lesions in this region.

1922 Iowa Hawkeye Football Team

Hawkeye pride!

Hawkeyes, especially Hawkeye dentists have always had a great deal of school spirit. A little over one-hundred years ago in 1922, Max C. Frazier ('08 DDS), who was a practicing dentist in Oskaloosa at the time, wrote in to the University of Iowa alumni magazine (The Iowa Alumnus) speaking about "local interest in Iowa's championship football team." He added, "We want the followers of the game and more especially the Old Gold followers to know that we in this section appreciate the coaching staff of Iowa." Coach Howard Jones led the Hawks to a 7-0 record in 1922, and the team scored almost 30 points per game and giving up less than 5! 🖤💛🖤💛
