Advising Information

Welcome to the Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (DWLLC) Newsletter! This newsletter is emailed to all students with majors or minors housed in DWLLC. In these newsletters, you will find a variety of information that will connect you to events, resources, funding, and internships/volunteer opportunities. 

  • The first week of classes (8/26-9/2) is the easiest time to a make a schedule change

    • Add, drop, or change existing registration on MyUI, no permissions required

  • Starting on September 3:

    • Last Day to Add a Course without College Approval: Friday, September 9th

      • For adds, you will also need permission from the instructor/department & primary advisor.  You can find the complete instructions hereOnce you have obtained the permissions, you will need to complete the add in MyUI. Make sure you see the added course in your Fall 24 course list.

    • Last Day to DROP a Course without a W: Friday, September 9th

      • For Drops, you will need primary advisor permission available here. Once you have obtained permission to drop, you will need to complete the drop in MyUI. Make sure the course is no longer in your Fall 23 course list.

    • Last Day to request P/N Grading for a Fall course: Friday, September 1st

Student Engagement Fair

  • Date: Wednesday, September 4th, 2024
  • Time: 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Location: Hubbard Park
Why join a student organization?
  • Meet friends with similar, or differing, interests
  • Learn about new activities and ways of thinking
  • Participate in cultural, sports, political, or entertainment activities
  • Run for positions in the organization
  • Build skills and your resume
On the day of the event
  • Think about what might interest you, and what might challenge you to Excel, Stretch, Choose, Engage, or Serve (the Iowa Challenge)
  • Can't make it? That's okay! Set up an advising appointment to learn more about how you can engage during your time at Iowa. 

Student Employment Fair

  • Date: Wednesday, August 28, 2024
  • Time: 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Location: Main Lounge, IMU
Information for Students:
This fair is for students looking for part time employment. Below is a list of tips for the job fair:
  • Come as you are - You don't need to wear a suit, but you don't want to come in work-out clothes.
  • Bring your class schedule and available work hours.
  • If you are applying for Work-Study jobs, you should also bring verification of your Work-Study eligibility. You can access this information in MyUI. Make sure you select the appropriate semester/session.
  • Bring your resume.
  • Bring the names, telephone numbers, and email addresses for individuals you will list on applications as personal or employment references.
  • To be paid by an employer, you must complete the Form I-9 with your employer within three days of the start of work. To complete the form you will need identity documents. Be sure to bring these documents with you to campus - examples of these types of documents include: Passport, Birth Certificate, SS Card.
  • Be aware of the Job Fair hours of 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  If you have class during that time period and are not able to attend, be sure to check out jobs on Handshake

Study Aboard Fair

  • Date: Tuesday, September 17, 2024
  • Time: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Location: IMU, International Ballroom
Why should you attend the fair?
  • The Study Abroad Fair is the place to find out about the international opportunities available to you at the University of Iowa.
  • Explore study abroad programs and global internships.
  • Learn about scholarships and grants for international experiences.
  • Connect with students who have returned from abroad, study abroad advisors, and faculty who lead programs abroad.
  • Discover how going abroad fits into your major.

Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement Open House

  • Date: Tuesday, August 27, 2024
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Location: West Side locations near Melrose Ave.

The Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement (MISSE) is pleased to host our annual Open House on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, 2-4 p.m. Join us to tour the spaces, to learn about the MISSE’s history, communities, programs, to enjoy food, and more. The event is open to all students, faculty, and staff.
