Amanda Haertling Thein named dean of CU Boulder School of Education

Amanda Haertling Thein, the University of Iowa’s associate provost for graduate and professional education and dean of the Graduate College, has accepted the position of dean at the University of Colorado Boulder School of Education. She will continue to serve in her current role at the UI until her new appointment begins on July 1.

2024 Working at Iowa survey shows improvement across campus

The 2024 Working at Iowa survey showed improvement in 14 out of 19 questions, including more than 94% of respondents who said they understand their work expectations and are treated with respect by their supervisor. The survey was sent to 6,609 regular faculty and staff in October 2024. A total of 4,163 faculty and staff responded.

9 UI online programs earn national honors

U.S. News & World Report has ranked nine University of Iowa programs among the best in the country in its ranking of online programs. The ranked programs are within the Tippie College of Business, College of Education, and College of Nursing.

The Iowa Initiative for Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology Services now offer students and employees short courses leading to HawkAI certification in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Introductory trainings are being offered again this semester, along with more advanced courses focused on AI research and data analytics.

In this Q&A, Mike Pentella, professor epidemiology in the UI College of Public Health and director of the State Hygienic Laboratory, explains how the disease spreads — usually among birds — and that public health surveillance is critical to prevent spreading.

Sometimes saying ‘no’ can be the right thing

When we say "no" thoughtfully and intentionally, we’re not just making space for ourselves — we’re creating opportunities for others. Maybe saying "no" is exactly what someone else needs to find their yes. This perspective doesn’t erase the difficulty of saying "no," but it makes it a little easier to accept. It reminds us that setting boundaries isn’t about quitting or failing. It’s about making room for what truly matters, both for ourselves and for others.

  • Register for the next Brand 101 training: Brand overview training is available for all faculty and staff who want to gain a better understanding of who we are, how to leverage our visual identity, and the resources available to help bring it all together. Those interested can register for the Feb. 20 “Brand 101” course via My Training in Employee Self-Service.
  • Register for Provost’s Global Forum: The Provost’s Global Forum, titled “Private Sector and University Partnerships: Pursuing Pathways for Global Collaboration, Learning, Prosperity, and Democracy,” will take place Feb. 6–8. You can register to attend all days of the forum or choose which day to attend.
  • Nominations open for Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy: The Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy honors UI administrators, staff, and faculty in nonteaching roles who support undergraduate education and serve as strong advocates for undergraduate students. Nominations are due Feb. 7.
  • Recognize mental health work on campus with Mental Health Champion Award: The Mental Health Champion Award is given to students, staff, faculty members, or groups who have cultivated an environment that values and recognizes mental health. Nominations are due Feb. 14.
