Iowa researchers to build database of Grant Wood’s artwork

Grant Wood taught at Iowa from 1934 to 1942 from a studio in the former Art Building, continuing to capture Iowa in his artwork even after his iconic American Gothic painting made him famous. To better understand the full scope of his work, a team of Iowa researchers will build a digital database of Wood’s creations so students can study his life and art for years to come.

UI’s Jamel Brinkley wins Maya Angelou Book Award

Jamel Brinkley, assistant professor in the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, was named the winner of the Maya Angelou Book Award for Witness: Stories. Brinkley was selected as the winner from five finalists who emerged from a field of 150 submissions. Witness: Stories is the first short story collection to win the award.

Tippie researcher fights bias by developing new AI algorithms

Machine learning isn’t immune to bias when analyzing large amounts of data. To combat this problem, Qihang Lin, associate professor of business analytics in the Tippie College of Business, has developed two algorithms that can be used to reduce racial and gender bias in artificial intelligence.

UI clinical trial shows increased survival in advanced pancreatic cancer patients

Results from a recent study at UI Health Care found that adding high-dose, intravenous (IV) vitamin C to chemotherapy doubles the overall survival of patients with late-stage pancreatic cancer. Patients who received the IV vitamin C also reported feeling better during treatment and had fewer side effects. Joe Cullen, UI professor of surgery and radiation oncology, was senior author of the study.

Iowa Geological Survey leading carbon dioxide emission study

The Iowa Geological Survey is at the center of a two-year U.S. Department of Energy study to see the feasibility of a new method to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Researchers led by Ryan Clark, geologist at the Iowa Geological Survey, will see how they could store carbon dioxide deep under the Earth’s surface, something that has not yet been proven to work in Iowa.

Learning from winter and the wintering seasons in our lives

As humans, we tend to struggle against what we cannot control. The ability to push back is crucially important in many aspects of life and is a survival skill. However, there are times when acceptance, not struggle, is the way to deal with life. Accepting natural cycles, like seasons, allows us to open to a full experience instead of spending precious energy avoiding, being distracted from, or pushing against it.

Iowa soccer team makes historic run in NCAA tournament

Congratulations to the University of Iowa soccer team for advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in program history. The Hawkeyes advanced by defeating Georgetown 1-0 on Nov. 22. The team fell 1-0 to Virginia Tech on Nov. 24 to end their season at 15-3-4. We are so proud of you!

Film adapted from Rachel Yoder’s novel opens this weekend

Nightbitch, which stars Amy Adams, opens this weekend in movie theaters. The movie is based on the debut novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder, assistant professor in the Department of Cinematic Arts. Yoder will be at a special pre-screening at 7 tonight at FilmScene, which will also feature Nightbitch trivia.

Get ready for an afternoon of music at the biggest band event in Iowa. The UI Band Extravaganza takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Xtream Arena and features several local bands, including the Hawkeye Marching Band. Tickets can be purchased online.
