Funding Landscape

NIH announces the Human Virome Program.
The purpose of this program is to address the technological challenges that are currently hindering robust interrogation of the constituents and functionality of the human virome. Despite major advances in sequencing technology and computational analysis of large sequence data sets, challenges remain in examining viruses.

NSF releases the study of Organismal Response to Climate Change (ORCC) Program.
The purpose of this program is to improve understanding and predictions of life on a warming planet. This program supports integrative, cross-disciplinary research that explores the mechanistic and eco-evolutionary responses of organisms to climate change, aiming to improve predictions, develop solutions for mitigating impacts and support the bioeconomy.

Limited Submission Opportunities

Mary Kay Foundation: Innovative/Translational Cancer Research Grant Program 2025

Description: The Mary Kay Ash FoundationSM is a non-profit public foundation, which focuses on funding research for innovative grants for translational research of cancers affecting women (ovarian, uterine, breast, endometrial or cervical cancer among others). Translational research is broadly defined as research that will provide a scientific link between laboratory research and the clinic. Such research would lead to improvement in diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, or treatment of the cancer.
Limitation: one application per institution
Internal Submission Deadline: Monday, December 16, 2024
Sponsor Deadline: Saturday, February 1, 2025

NIH: Advancing Research Careers (ARC) Institutionally-Focused Research Education Award to Promote Diversity (UE5 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Description: The NIH Research Education Program supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The overarching goal of this ARC UE5 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, for example those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences (see Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity ), to pursue further studies or careers in research. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this NOFO will support educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development and Mentoring Activities.
Limitation: one application per institution
Internal Submission Deadline: Tuesday, December 17, 2024

NIH: Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) (T32)

Description: The goal of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is to develop a diverse pool of well-trained clinician-scientist leaders available to address the nation’s biomedical research needs. Specifically, this funding announcement provides support to eligible, domestic organizations to develop and implement effective, evidence-informed approaches to dual-degree training and mentoring that will keep pace with the rapid evolution of the biomedical research enterprise and lead to the completion of both a clinical degree (for example, M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S., Pharm.D., etc.) and a research doctorate degree (Ph.D.).
Limitation: one application per institution
Internal Submission Deadline: Tuesday, December 17, 2024
Sponsor Deadline: Saturday, January 25, 2025
NOTE: Proposal must not overlap with current MSTP training program and NIGMS will support only one training program in each training area per institution.

Reminder: NSF: Focus on Recruiting Emerging Climate and Adaptation Scientists and Transformers - Track 1 Coordination Hub Only

Description: Focus On Recruiting Emerging Climate and Adaptation Scientists and Transformers (FORECAST) seeks to facilitate the transition from status quo graduate career preparation to a student-centered model with a particular emphasis on building entrepreneurial and innovation capacity at emerging research institutions (ERIs). Track 1 will support one Coordination Hub, to coordinate support for rising seniors from emerging research institutions (ERIs) or historically excluded and underserved groups as part of a national cohort to participate in structured professional development opportunities.
Limitation: two applications per institution
