Dean's Message

The White Coat Ceremony is later today at 6:00 p.m. The white coat is given out at the end of a dental student's first year to signify the beginning of a dental student’s career as a health care professional. To our D1 students, we are excited that you are taking these first steps of entering the dental profession. It is a noble profession because of the efforts of dentists who came before you. As you take these steps today, we look forward to the great things that you will accomplish for our profession. ~Clark Stanford

Always a Hawkeye: Janet Guthmiller named dean of UNC Adams School of Dentistry

Janet Guthmiller ('88 DDS), who has served as dean of the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry for eight years, has been named the dean of the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry. She will begin her new role at UNC on Oct. 15.

Butali recognized for his efforts as a mentor

Butali serves as a mentor to numerous other students and researchers, and on May 12, he received a Faculty Award recognizing those efforts. Butali’s students shared their appreciation for their mentor with the Hawkeye Smile.

Two fourth-year dental students recognized for efforts to promote inclusive education

Fourth-year dental students Chichi Adeleke and Megha Puranam both received awards at the Center for Inclusive Academic Excellence Graduation Reception. Adeleke received the Dean's Achievement Award, and Puranam received the Student Leadership Award. Puranam also delivered the keynote address.

Waheed Awotoye receiving International Student Academic and Scholarship Award

Waheed Awotoye receives Award for his Academic and Scholarly Work

At the 2022 International Student Graduation ceremony, Waheed Awotoye was presented with the International Student Academic and Scholarship Award. Earlier this spring, Awotoye defended his dissertation under the direction of Azeez Butali. Since 2020, Awotoye has been an author of 11 research articles in the field of genetics and genomics as part of Butali’s research team.

The College of Dentistry welcomes Elizabeth Serena

Elizabeth Serena is a support services specialist in Clinic Administration and Patient Care. She is originally from Bettendorf, IA and moved to Iowa City several years ago to further her education at the University of Iowa. She enjoys literary events and supporting her favorite downtown restaurants.

Scrubs sale with Hawkeye branding

Hawkeye scrubs are back! OPEN until May 27! Hosted by Delta Sigma Delta! Scrub tops and bottoms are split into tall, generic, and petite options. The Cherokee brand has also released a new material called Core Stretch which is comparable to FIGS scrubs, please click into each option for more information. The scrubs will be embroidered and sent to the school or can be directly shipped to your home for an extra fee. If all goes according to plan, they should be distributed before summer vacation (two week after the store closes).
