College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Spring is here, and a little earlier than usual! With the academic year nearing the end, we will have so many accomplishments and awards to celebrate over the coming months. Whether it's our D4s ringing the cowbell, departmental awards ceremonies, dissertation and theses completed, or our upcoming White Coat ceremony, it's a season to enjoy what we've accomplished. New beginnings are wonderful, but take time to enjoy what you've done, especially with this beautiful weather. You deserve it! ~Clark Stanford

Behi Bolboli and Melika Farshad presenting on Iran

Exploring the World: Iran Discussion

At the end of March, Melika Farshad, a dentist in the Admissions and Urgent Care clinics and in Faculty General Practice, and Behi Bolboli, a fourth-year dental student, jointly led an Exploring the World presentation on Iran, both of whom were originally from Iran and received academic degrees from Iran before immigrating to the United States. The presentation was well received, and gave attendees an appreciation for the healthcare differences between the U.S. healthcare system and Iran's healthcare system.

Kecia Leary and Amanda Shoemaker with Herky

Amanda Shoemaker returning to Illinois

After five years as the director of Alumni Relations and Continuing Education at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, Amanda Shoemaker has accepted a new position in her home state as the Director of Advancement Operations at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. Her last day in the office will be Thursday, April 20 but she will return for an encore in May to help staff alumni events at the IDA Meeting in Cedar Rapids. “Although I have loved being a Hawkeye, I couldn’t pass up this wonderful opportunity to return to my home state’s flagship university. I will greatly miss all the Iowa Dentistry alumni, donors, faculty, staff, and friends that I’ve met over the last five years,” Amanda said. Amanda will soon join dentistry alumni in calling the University of Iowa her alma mater. She will complete her Ed.D. in higher education leadership in the spring of 2025. “The college appreciates Amanda’s dedication and work over the last five years, and I’ve appreciated working with her over the last year. We wish her the best in her new endeavor.” The college expects to have someone in Shoemaker’s position sometime in the coming months and will announce her successor at that point. In the meantime, please send any CE or Alumni Relations-related questions to the shared Dentistry CE email address (dentistry-ce@uiowa.edu) after April 20.

Christina Smith's review

Kudos to you!

Christina Smith's review: "They helped me so much with my son’s dental work. He needed a root canal and he felt so comfortable. Dr. O is the best. I wish we could have her as our primary for life! She’s amazing. She was caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, and validated my concerns. The nurse’s & support staff were wonderful. If I could give a higher score I would."

Rogue Ledesma Justiniani

Iowa Trailblazers: R.L. Justiniani, the first Asian/Pacific Islander Dental Graduate from Iowa?

Rogue Ledesma Justiniani (1913 DDS) graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1913 with his DDS. He was from the Philippines, and he returned to Manila after graduation, and was one of four practicing dentists in Manila for a population of well over 200,000 (at the time). The October 1913 edition of the Iowa Alumnus indicated that Justiniana "returned home" to the "Philippine Islands" after graduation. The 1915 edition of the Iowa Alumnus confirmed this and contained a letter from Justiniani updating his classmates about his marriage and his dental practice in Manila, Philippines. In the letter, he attributed his success to being an "Iowa fellow." Justiniani may be the first dental graduate from Iowa who was of Asian or Pacific Islander descent.
