Dean's Message

It's always busy in September! Starting today, we have our Alumni Reunion weekend. I am looking forward to seeing old friends and colleagues, and honoring our esteemed alumni awardees. Next week, the college will have faculty and staff retreat days respectively. It's exciting to share our collective accomplishments, see our colleagues from across the college, and continue supporting our college. We hope you will join for our alumni reunion today and tomorrow, and our faculty and staff retreats next week. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Research

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Alhazmi DM, Shi W, Allareddy V, Anamali S, Allareddy TV, Rengasamy Venugopalan S. A cone beam computed tomographic analysis of cervical vertebral nonsegmentation. Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol. 2023 Jul 12:S2212-4403(23)00545-X. doi: 10.1016/j.oooo.2023.07.010. PMID: 37635010.

This study used cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to investigate the radiologic features of cervical vertebral nonsegmentation in patients with no known syndromes or pathoses. The study found that cervical vertebral nonsegmentation is not particularly prevalent. Mostly, it is partial, occurs most commonly in vertebrae C2-C3, and usually involves the transverse process and body. Use of CBCT to identify cervical vertebral nonsegmentation is important, since it can cause degenerative joint disease as people get older, thereby increasing the risk for muscle weakness, head and neck pain, limited movement, and neurologic complications for those patients.

1922 Iowa Hawkeye Football Team

Hawkeye pride!

Hawkeyes, especially Hawkeye dentists have always had a great deal of school spirit. One-hundred-and-one years ago in 1922, Max C. Frazier ('08 DDS), who was a practicing dentist in Oskaloosa at the time, wrote in to the University of Iowa alumni magazine (The Iowa Alumnus) speaking about "local interest in Iowa's championship football team." He added, "We want the followers of the game and more especially the Old Gold followers to know that we in this section appreciate the coaching staff of Iowa." Coach Howard Jones led the Hawks to a 7-0 record in 1922, and the team scored almost 30 points per game and giving up less than 5! 🖤💛🖤💛
