| Dean's Message
As the winter holiday season approaches, I have really enjoyed seeing us come together as a college in fun activities like our winter gathering and ornament contest. More importantly, however, I appreciate how we are making the effort to come together as a collegiate community to support, listen, learn from, and grow with one another. Enjoy the holidays! | | Updates for December 16, 2022–January 13, 2022 | | | From the faculty, staff, and students at the College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, we wish you a happy holiday season and a joyous new year! In addition to celebrating together with colleagues, the college enjoyed sharing good food and looking at the various ornaments submitted for the college's 2023 Winter Ornament Contest Winners. | | Alumni visit Iowa Derrick Williamson ('93 PROSS, MS) visited the college with Linda Williamson ('93 ENDO, MS) on Friday December 9, 2022. Derrick Williamson gave a great talk to the college on digital technologies in a private prosthodontic practice. He then visited with prosthodontic program residents, providing insights and advice. The collegiate community and residents enjoyed their time with Derrick and Linda Williamson. | | | When Howard Cowen (’76 DDS, ’95 MS) joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry faculty in 1982, he served as the Director of the Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit, which provided care to elderly patients across the state starting in 1979. Throughout his career, Cowen has focused on making sure that underserved populations receive the highest quality dental care, and has helped to shape the educational offerings to dental students in the field of underserved populations. The program is designed to enhance the leadership skills of ADA member dentists who belong to racial, ethnic and/or gender backgrounds that have been traditionally underrepresented in leadership roles.
To complete the program, Stuefen presented her work with the Iowa Dental Association’s Medicaid ask. As the IDA Medicaid Committee Chair, Stuefen is directly involved in the IDA’s Medicaid priority and used this opportunity to show those in the program what Iowa has done to advocate for an increase in dental Medicaid rates. Stuefen hopes to apply the skills she developed at the institute to benefit all Iowa dentists through IDA advocacy. Hat tip to the IDA! | | | Our sincerest thanks to Ida Rose (’99 DDS) for her generous gift establishing a new scholarship in support of underrepresented students in the College of Dentistry. After receiving her DDS at Iowa in 1999, Dr. Rose completed a one-year general practice residency at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York. Driven by her love for children, she then entered Howard University’s pediatric dental program, where she earned her certificate in pediatric dentistry. In 2007, Rose earned her Diplomate status with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She practices at the Children’s Dental Group in Lithia Springs, GA, as well as serves on staff at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Wellstar. She is the proud mom of Noah and Olivia, enjoys spending time with family and friends, and volunteers in her local church. This article represents some of the close collaboration between the colleges of dentistry, pharmacy, and engineering, and the Department of Chemistry. The paper was developed by two operative residents initially. The study examined dentin biomodification, which is a promising approach to enhance dental tissue biomechanics and biostability for restorative and reparative therapies. One of the most active dentin tissue biomodifiers is proanthocyanidin (PAC)-rich natural extracts, which are used in the dental bonding procedure in combination with resin-based adhesives (RBAs). This study aimed to investigate the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) for the sustained delivery of PACs for dentin biomodification as a novel drug-delivery system for dental applications. The study results demonstrated that MSN can be successfully added to experimental dental primer and adhesive formulations to promote and maintain adequate bonding performance. Although some mechanical properties of RBAs containing PAC-loaded MSN were compromised, primer formulations containing these nanoparticles presented enhanced bond strength at immediate and long-term testing than did the control formulation. | | Hawkeye history: holiday tuba performance!
