College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

This week the University of Iowa launched an ambitious $3 billion fundraising campaign called Together Hawkeyes, which will impact every aspect of the university. For Dentistry, it means we will address four key pillars: 1) Faculty recruitment and retention. 2) Student wellness and success. 3) Building for the future. 4) Transformative clinic technologies. These four pillars will ensure the University of Iowa College of Dentistry continues to fulfill its mission of advancing oral health for the people of Iowa and beyond through education, research, and person-centered care and expands upon it. I am excited for what this means for our wonderful college, our community, and our state. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Iowa Dentistry participants in IMOM 2023

IMOM 2023 Recap

Proudly serving Iowans! The Iowa Mission of Mercy was held on October 13-14 in Waterloo. Over the weekend, the dentists and dental staff saw 1,080 patients. All dental care at the event is provided for free to those who come and are willing to wait. As in previous years, the college played a vital role in providing care on Saturday. Many students, residents, and faculty and staff turned out to support the free clinics. And it isn't just dentists and dental students either. Our sterilization team plays a vital role in supporting IMOM, numerous dental assistants also serve, and some front office staff play important roles—and have for many years.

Record number of dental student applications received!

We did it!  As projected, we had another record-breaking year since our electronic record keeping began in 2013. The final number of submitted applications for the 2024-2025 academic year was 1,135. Getting high-quality applicants is the first step to getting a new, excellent class of dental students to carry on Iowa tradition of excellence. Thank you to our admissions team, Rachael Kowbel, director of dental student admissions, and Marie Maston, and to Associate Dean Sherry Timmons and John Warren, chair of the admissions committee.

Members from the Dental Public Health Club volunteered to dispense toothbrushes and toothpaste, and to provide oral hygiene education and resources to children and participants of this year's Bone Dash 5k and Monster Mile. This event, which had almost 400 runners/walkers, benefits the pediatric patient population affected by the autoimmune disease, rheumatic disease. The Joining Hands support group was founded so that kids with this condition in Iowa can find connections, receive additional education, and hopefully spread awareness within the community. The race took place at the Timber Dome Lodge at the Solon Nature and Recreation Area, and many members of the Iowa community and other supporters were present, including Herky and the 501 Rebel Legion.

Why Iowa: Clinical experience

Early patient experiences, including for first-year dental students, and Iowa's combined clerkship and comprehensive care approach to dental education helps Iowa rank among the top schools in amount of clinical experiences.

Research

Collaborative and Innovative Research

This systematic review was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of interproximal contact loss (ICL) between implant restorations and adjacent teeth in relation to age, gender, follow-up time, and arch location. Among the 15 students that met the inclusion criteria, the researchers found that the prevalence of ICL was high and was more frequently than not at the mesial rather than the distal contact. The data presented in the systematic review indicated the proximal contacts at the mesial aspect were lost 2.1 times more than those at the distal aspect. They researchers found no significant differences in relation to age, gender, and mandibular or maxillary arch.

George F. Andreasen

Hawkeye trailblazers: George Andreasen

Orthodontics patients have former UI College of Dentistry professor George F. Andreasen to thank for reducing their time in braces through the introduction of nitinol wire, also known as memory wire or shape memory alloy. This is one example of how innovation research at Iowa has transformed dentistry.
