UI first public university to partner with program for exceptionally talented youth

The University of Iowa is the first public university in North America to partner with the Rise initiative, the flagship program of a $1 billion global philanthropic effort to identify and support exceptionally talented youth and provide them with opportunities to work together to serve others. The partnership opens the door for Rise Global Winners to attend the UI.

As if we needed any more reasons to be proud of the Iowa women’s basketball team, here’s one more. As one of the elite teams in the nation, the women are using their spotlight for good by giving back to the university and community and inspiring the next generation of female athletes.

Vote for the Hawkeye Marching Band in Metallica’s marching band competition

Vote for the Hawkeye Marching Band in Metallica’s first-ever marching band competition! Metallica challenged college marching bands to perform their music during their halftime shows and the Hawkeyes gave a rousing performance on Sept. 30 at Kinnick Stadium. Watch the performance online and vote for the Hawkeyes by Dec. 31.

Holiday Tubas at Old Cap will add some oompah to your holidays

Enjoy one of Iowa’s longest-standing traditions at the Old Capitol at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8: the Holiday Tubas led by John Manning, associate professor of tuba and euphonium. Afterward, head inside for cookies and camaraderie. Toy donations will be collected for Iowa City’s Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

PhD student’s research uses Iowa’s ‘Fields of Dreams’ to mitigate harmful chemicals

By using Iowa’s most plentiful agricultural product, corn, PhD student David Ramotowski is researching how biochar made from corn can decrease the effects of harmful chemicals in soil deposits. Ramotowski presented his research at this year’s Three-Minute Thesis competition, where he won the top prize. The contest asks graduate students to clearly explain their complex research in three minutes or less.
