Career Center Connection
Career Center Connection

Hello Hawkeyes!

We’re extending a mighty Pomerantz Career Center welcome to all of you! We realize that campus life looks a bit different this semester, but we want you to know that our office continues to provide career advising and assistance with your career needs, questions, and concerns this fall.

We’re excited to announce that we’ll also be sharing Career Center information and happenings with you through this – our new e-newsletter – Career Center Connection! Yes, you've been inundated with mass emails these past couple of weeks, but rest assured, this newsletter is adapted to YOUR career interests in mind. You’ll receive this newsletter only three times this semester; it will be your way to stay updated on Career Center events, services, and resources so you’ll want to make sure to open it as soon as it lands in your inbox!

Did you know the Career Center advises students based on their career interests? We offer 10 Career Communities organized by specific career fields in which you can explore occupations, learn about student organizations and volunteer opportunities, and find job and internship listings.

What is a Career Community?

We believe the degree you choose to pursue shouldn't limit you to where you want to apply it. That's why the Pomerantz Career Center uses an interest-based career advising model so that the support you receive along your journey towards career success is tailored to you and your own career goals.

Helping & Counseling

Because of the major you've selected, you're in the Helping & Counseling Career Community. We have career advisors on standby who specialize in your interest areas.

Keep reading to learn how to make an appointment with your career community advisor, and don't forget to bookmark your career community page for more career-specific info and a live RSS feed of current job and internship opportunities waiting for you to apply!

We're here for you.

To support university efforts and safety protocol for COVID-19, the Pomerantz Career Center will be open with limited staffing, while continuing to offer 1:1 career advising and events virtually.

Career Advising

1:1 Career Advising will be held via Zoom or phone, depending on your preference. You can schedule an appointment to talk with a Career Advisor on MyUI.

Career Peer Advising

In need of some quick career advice? Schedule a virtual appointment with a Career Peer Advisor to chat about your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn, and Handshake.  Schedule via MyUI and select General – Peer Advising as your career interest area.

Online Resume and Cover Letter Reviews

You can submit your resume or cover letter for review by filling out the form here: careers.uiowa.edu/form/online-resume-review-optin. Note that you must upload your resume/cover letter in Handshake, and your feedback will come to you as a Handshake message within a few days.

Mock Interviews

Mock interviews are a great way for students to practice their interview skills with an experienced professional. This opportunity allows you to receive feedback on what you're doing well and areas that need improvement before interviews for internships and jobs. All mock interviews will be held virtually this semester and students can sign up through Handshake.

Employer Hosted Events

Wondering how to connect with employers this fall? Many of them are hosting virtual events to help you learn about them, roles available, and application processes. Log-in to Handshake and click the “events” tab for an up to date listing of employer-hosted events.

Career Center Courses

We offer courses for 1, 2 or 3 credit hours through departments LS and CCP. Pick up a short course for the 2nd half of the semester, and look for them as you build your schedule for future semesters. Build your communication skills, teamwork experience or learn more about getting into graduate school!
