It's time to begin preparing for Spring 2021 Final Exams
Please review the course sections scheduled for those subjects for which your department is administrative home and submit their requested final exam assignment needs. Each department is responsible for submitting their own courses' final exam assignment needs, including both undergraduate and graduate level courses. We ask that you submit final exam needs for ALL course sections. If a course section does not require a final exam assignment, please indicate such on the Exam Needs form.
COVID-19 Information
In light of COVID restrictions, please note the following with regard to in-person final examination assignments:
- Any final exam section with 50+ enrollment will be online. We will only schedule a date/time for courses that request a final exam through our exam needs tool regardless of classroom preference. If a course does not fill out the exam needs tool, we will automatically assign a date/time. If a classroom is desired by a department, the total student capacity per room will be no greater than 65 and approval is required by the Office of the Provost. These approvals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and based on classroom availability. If you would like to seek approval, please email renee-houser@uiowa.edu.
- Any final exam section with 49 or less enrollment can choose to have a face-to-face exam or an online exam. We will automatically schedule all face-to-face exams at double or triple seating (depending on availability) regardless of seating type preference. If a course does not fill out the exam needs tool, we will automatically assign a date/time but we will not assign a classroom. A classroom can be added later, if needed, as availability allows.
Spring 2020 Final Exam Dates
Final exam week is May 10-14, 2021.
Submission and Deadline
Final exam needs are submitted online via the "Exam Needs" submission application in MAUI. Departments must submit their requests no later than January 20, 2021, at 4:30pm.
Instructions and Policies
Instructions and scheduling policies are located on the Office of the Registrar's website.
- Each department is responsible for submitting final exam needs for all subjects for which their department is administrative home. This includes undergraduate and graduate level courses, and courses with or without final exam assignment needs.
- The Office of the Registrar website includes scheduling criteria by which final exam assignments will be made in the event we either receive incomplete information or we do not receive any information from a department by the submission deadline.
- Please note that when the final examination date and time are assigned to a course section, the goal is to minimize the number of exam conflicts for the students. Final exam day of the week and time preferences are only given consideration under special extenuating circumstances such as instructor injury/illness or when an instructor will be traveling on University academic business.
- Instructors and students are expected to be present for ALL of finals week until the schedule has been officially published. Please note in the comments section of the Exam Needs tool any special scheduling needs. While we cannot guarantee that any special requests can be fulfilled, we will certainly take them into consideration.
Incomplete and Late Submissions
Please be aware by submitting incomplete or no information, you may be unnecessarily tying up exam resources which are needed by others.
Requests made after the schedule has been published will require written approval from the Chair/DEO and the Dean of the department responsible for the course. All requests must include the curricular justification for the late addition or release. Please note that course sections granted final exam assignments after the schedule has been published are responsible for administering makeup final exams regardless of exam precedence rules.
Faculty Review Period
Faculty will be able to review their final exam assignments before the schedule is published. The faculty review period is February 12-17, 2021.
Professional Colleges
We understand the Carver College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry, Law, and Pharmacy maintain their own final exam schedules and generally do not follow the final exam schedule set by the Office of the Registrar.
We recognize that some departments offer courses that allow undergraduate student enrollment. You can request a final exam assignment from the Office of the Registrar for these course sections in order to reduce the likelihood of exam conflicts for undergraduate students. This can potentially help limit the need for makeup final exam arrangements by your instructors.
Departments can request a final exam assignment from the Office of the Registrar by using the "Exam Needs" submission application in MAUI. Instructions and scheduling policies are located on the Office of the Registrar's website, if needed. Requests must be submitted by January 20, 2021, at 4:30pm.
