REMINDER: commencement volunteers still needed
REMINDER: commencement volunteers still needed

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Dear CLAS Colleagues,

I'm reaching out once more to ask if you can help at commencement next month.

As you know, each year we celebrate the accomplishments and graduation of undergraduate students from our wonderful College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. CLAS will have two graduation ceremonies, at 9am and 1pm. Key to the success of this day is the participation of faculty and staff who serve in the following key roles:

  • Wayfinders/greeters: Volunteers stationed near venue entrances will be provided with venue maps, and will assist graduates and guests with finding their way to guest and graduate seating.
  • Card Hand-out: Volunteers on the floor level at the card hand-out areas will help graduates find their name cards, or, in some cases, will have graduates fill out a name card.
  • Marshals: Volunteers stationed on the floor who help guide students during the ceremony and release rows during the presentation of the graduates.
  • Ushers: Volunteers stationed at each card hand-out area will direct graduates to take a seat in their assigned seating block after they've picked up their name card.

Commencement is a joyful event, filled with anticipation and pride; and it does not happen without volunteers.  Yet, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences currently has the lowest faculty and staff participation rate of any college across the university.  Let's change that and give our CLAS graduates the fantastic send-off they deserve.

Please consider serving at either commencement ceremony in one of these roles.

At this link you can find more information about these volunteer opportunities, including details and time commitment, and you can sign up for a role. Or, contact our commencement coordinator Lisa Gray (lisa-gray@uiowa.edu) with any questions.

Thank you for everything that you do for the college and our amazing students!
