College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Last Friday, we granted our D1 students faculty-supervised clinical privileges, and next Friday, we will have our commencement ceremony as our D4 students graduate and start their careers as new dentists. With these celebrations and accomplishments, we also have new beginnings. This next week, applications for our DDS program will begin on June 1, and afterwards our admissions committee will begin the process of selecting those students who will be our class of 2027. The accomplishments that the classes of 2022 and 2025 are celebrating now depend on the on-going and persistent efforts of our admissions team and admissions committee. Thank you and keep up the good work! ~Clark Stanford

Updates for May 27, 2022–June 2, 2022

Lynn Curry with Clark Stanford and Barbara Wilson

Always a Hawkeye: Lynn Curry ('65 DDS) recognized with Eight over 80 award

The University of Iowa Center for Advancement named Lynn Curry ('65 DDS) one of their Eight over 80 award winners. These awards are given to Iowa alumni, age 80 and over, who carry the Hawkeye spirit of achievement and continue to help others. Curry certainly fits that bill for us—he is a board member for the Iowa Delta Dental Foundation that he founded, and also on the Delta Dental Plan of Iowa and UI Dental Alumni Board. For our college, he is a champion for student recruitment, making phone calls and connecting with potential students. Curry's family helped him celebrate at the ceremony, including his daughter, Cathy Tigges ('93 DDS) and his granddaughter, Kaitlyn Tigges who is a second-year dental student.

Patrick Lloyd

Always a Hawkeye: Patrick Lloyd appointed dean of Stony Brook Dental School

Patrick Lloyd, who was chair of Family Dentistry at Iowa from 1996 to 2004, was recently appointed dean of Stony Brook University's School of Dental Medicine. Lloyd was previously dean of The Ohio State University.

Jennifer Black

Always a Hawkeye: Jennifer Black ('11 DDS) named Iowan of the Week

Jennifer Black ('11 DDS) was named Iowan of the Week by U.S. Representative Axne for Black's efforts as dental director at All Care Health Center in Council Bluffs. Her work at this community health center provides care for Iowans who would otherwise have very limited oral health care options.

White Coat Ceremony

Last Friday, the college granted our first-year dental students clinical privileges under the supervision of faculty. Their white coats symbolize the beginning of their clinical careers, and this privilege confers great responsibility for the well-being of their patients. Yet it is also a time to celebrate! Photos from the events are available on Facebook, Instagram, and in the UI photo shelter (HawkID required). The live stream of the ceremony is available on the White Coat Ceremony webpage.

Hawkeyes Help: Orthodontics interest group makes blankets for service project

The orthodontics student-interest group made cut-and-tie blankets for UIHC's Stead Family Children's Hospital. The students made the blankets last Wednesday, May 18, and third-year dental student Jillian Belieu delivered the blankets to the children's hospital earlier this week. Hawkeyes help!

Why Iowa: Collaborative and Person-Centered Care

Iowa has 10 of 12 ADA -recognized dental specialties all under one roof. As Hawkeyes, we pride ourselves on our commitment to collaborative, person-centered care that draws from each of these specializations. The residents of the Department of Operative Dentistry speak to the beauty of what this means in practice for their department as they work with their colleagues in other specialties to meet the unique needs of each and every patient.

A Google Review from a patient

Kudos to you!

"From the scheduling staff on the phone, to the Dental Assistant and the Dentist, all made me feel welcome, comfortable and at ease while performing their individual tasks with the highest level of skill and professionalism. On time with no wait, and a doctor whose chairside manner made me feel as though I had known him for years. Highly recommend! I'll be back." Google Review from Paul Jahnke

Iowa Dental Association Highlights Kobi Voshell Profile

In its May 24 edition, the Iowa Dental Association shared our article on fourth-year dental student Kobi Voshell. They highlighted how his interest in dentistry was sparked initially by participating in an IMOM event prior to dental school. Here is one more way that IMOM makes a difference, not just for patients but also for providers and support.

Charles Thie at a Memorial Day Event

Iowa Trailblazers: Memorial Day reflections from retired Lt. Col. Charles Thie (’69 DDS)

Charles Thie ('69 DDS) is a retired Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force who served as a dentist during the Vietnam War and following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. In between these periods of service, Dr. Thie practiced dentistry in Burlington from 1972-1999. Thie’s record of service included his “most difficult assignment,” which was when he served at Dover Port Mortuary in Denver, Colorado. During this time, he identified 208 servicemen and women by their dental records during the first month of the Iraq War. "It was an honor," Thie said, politely declining to speak further on that experience.
