Grade Upload Guides

This email is being sent to all instructors teaching multiple courses. Please disregard this message if you have submitted final grades.

This is a reminder that final grades for full semester-length courses need to be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m., Dec 21 (today) and in "Approve" status no later than 4:30 pm, Dec. 22. The ICON export or .csv upload features can save time with the final grade entry process. These features are highly recommended for faculty teaching courses with high enrollment or multiple sections of the same course.

Links to Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology Help Pages are included in this email for your convenience. Questions regarding the ICON export/upload process should be directed to its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu or call 319-384-HELP (4357).

Questions regarding formatting .csv/ .txt files and uploading them into MAUI should be directed to reg-maui-support@uiowa.edu

Download a standard sample comma-separated file with a .txt or .csv extension. The standard file column headings must contain "student" and "grade". The headings "status" and "date" are optional. AUU, F, N, and U grades require status and last date of attendance information to be entered on the upload file or grade entry screen prior to submitting grades to the DEO for approval. Step-by-step upload instructions are located on our help pages.

Instructors and TAs can export their grades from ICON (Canvas) and upload the .csv file MAUI without editing the file using the instructions at https://teach.uiowa.edu/ICON/FAQ/grades.

The Canvas column headings must contain (other column headings may be present but will be ignored): SIS Login ID, Current Grade and Final Grade.

Please do not use Internet Explorer for your browser when uploading grades as we have experienced problems with this browser in the past. Use Chrome or Firefox when using this grade upload utility.

Grade Upload Help Pages

Maui .csv or .txt upload

Benefits of uploading grades

  • Use one .csv or .txt file when uploading grades for multiple sections (upload the file into each section. Uploading file into one section will not upload grades to all sections).
  • Reduce the amount of time spent hand entering grades
  • Ability to enter "status" and "date" information within the file for students earning AUU, F, N, U grades.
  • Your T.A. may not have access to submit grades but can format the file for you.
  • If your T.A. has access to "save" grades they may upload and save grades in MAUI for your review.

Exporting Grades from ICON

Benefits of Exporting Grades from ICON

  • Very little file formatting required (only need to add lead zeros to UID)
  • Grades from ICON are already entered into the file
  • Reduce time spent hand entering grades into MAUI
  • Can export separate grades files for each section
  • If your T.A. has access to ICON grades they may export the file and format appropriately for you.
  • If your T.A. has access to "save" grades they may upload and save grades in MAUI for your review.
