Dear Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Alumni, Students, Faculty, and Friends:

TOMORROW is a very special day for CEE!

On March 4, 1873, Civil Engineering was approved as a 4-year degree program at the University of Iowa. That makes TOMORROW our 150th anniversary! We have a remarkable past and a strong vision for the future! I wanted to mark this moment in our history with everyone in our CEE community.

We are planning to celebrate this 150-year milestone during Homecoming this year (on October 7th and the days leading up to it). STAY TUNED—more details to come later.

Some fun facts:

  • Civil Engineering started out in the Mathematics Department in 1873.
  • We joined the College of Applied Sciences when it was formed (1905), which later became the College of Engineering (1927).
  • The Civil Engineering program was first accredited by ABET in 1936.
  • Our new Environmental Engineering program was approved in 2017 and was accredited in 2021.

Happy 150th Anniversary to all!

Allen Bradley
