We cannot thank you enough for your engagement in HELI's events and programming this year. Because of your support, we have been able to create innovative courses, co-curricular programming, and unique professional opportunities for Iowa Law students. Some highlights from this year are below.
I hope we get to connect again in 2025!
Happy New Year -
Blake Rupe Program Director Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative at Iowa Law
HELI brought together experts during the Fall semester to discuss industrial agriculture, rural communities, environmental justice, and the economic implications of climate change for both public and private institutions.
HELI brought in experts to explore the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act in Iowa, climate resilience and justice, international environmental enforcement, and land conservation after Sackett v. EPA.
HELI's Shannon Roesler co-edited the volume and contributed a chapter to the newly released book "Adapting to High-Level Warming."
“Efforts to mitigate the devastating consequences of climate change remain paramount, but new governance structures will also be needed to address a future shaped by high levels of warming," commented Rachel Jean-Baptiste, ELI’s Vice President for Publications. “Because existing law and policy largely ignore this possibility, the Environmental Law Collaborative took it upon themselves to explore what 4°C might mean for a variety of current legal doctrines, planning policies, governance structures, and institutions.”
The first Hubbell Award for Excellence in Environmental Law was given to two students who made an outstanding contribution or demonstrated a commitment to the field of environmental, natural resources, and energy law. Congratulations Hosu Chang (24JD) and Spencer Culver (24JD)!
HELI created and launched the first environmental moot court team in Iowa Law’s history. For the first time ever, the three-person Iowa Law team competed in the Jeffrey G. Miller National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition (NELMCC) at Pace University’s Elisabeth Haub School of Law.
The College of Law was admitted as a Constituent Law School of the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law (FNREL). Iowa Law is one of only 35 law schools in the country to earn this designation. We are excited to strengthen our programs with the resources this designation provides.
Through HELI, Iowa Law had the unique ability to support law students by providing summer stipends to assist students pursuing public interest or public service careers in environmental law. In this pilot summer, HELI supported 12 students who work at 8 different organizations.
Iowa's own Austin Frerick will be at Iowa Law on February 26 to discuss his new book "Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America's Food Industry." Barons is the story of seven corporate titans in the food industry and their rise to power, with a lens on Iowa and the Midwest.
Join the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative and the College of Law in welcoming Richard J. Lazarus, Charles Stebbins Fairchild Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, for a talk about The Making of US Environmental Law - with a particular emphasis on the Midwest.
We look forward to continuing our work in 2025. If you are interested in partnering with HELI on events, programming, or research contact lawmail-heli@uiowa.edu.
