College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

This is the time of year when you often hear the Family Dentistry cowbell marking yet another D4 completing their final requirements. Our D4 students cherish this experience as it represents many years of their hard work—and not just in our college. And yet it also marks an accomplishment for our entire team. Our devoted faculty, staff, residents, and, of course, our patients are there to support, encourage, and cheer on our world-class students. With each ring of the bell, we look forward to the impact that you will make on the lives of your patients and the dental profession. It also makes me think back to my own experiences finishing up dental school and starting my career. What an experience! We are so proud to be a part of your journey. ~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Bowers RD, Young LB, Comnick CL, Kasundra HP, Barwacz CA. Perceived Didactic Curricular Effectiveness of In-Person vs. Virtual Formats amongst Fourth-Year Dental Students. Dent J (Basel). 2022 Apr 2;10(4):60. doi: 10.3390/dj10040060. PMID: 35448054; PMCID: PMC9025035.

We often hear about evidence-based dentistry, but we hear a lot less about evidence-based dental education. Iowa is a leader on the forefront of dental education research. This study exemplifies Iowa's commitment to evidence-based dental education, and it draws from experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in which students participated in virtual didactic seminars rather than in-person didactic seminars. The authors surveyed students who have experienced both types of instruction. The surveyed students reported being comfortable with the virtual format and that they retained the material from the course. However, only about one-fifth of the surveyed students wanted an all-virtual format. The authors concluded from the study that there is good reason to develop opportunities for hybrid formats with in-person and virtual means for delivering the content of didactic courses as predoctoral dental education continues to develop.
