Commencement Apparel

All graduates are expected to wear regalia at their ceremonies. If students have not obtained official regalia, they should do so as soon as possible. Students should make sure to take care of their apparel needs prior to commencement. Apparel will not be available to purchase at the ceremonies.

Each college has a specific color tassel associated with their ceremony.

Undergraduate students begin with their tassel on the right side; during the tassel turning portion of the ceremony, students will move the tassel from the right to the left.

Graduate students begin with their tassel on the left.

In addition to earning a degree, many students qualify for other academic recognitions. Please see the graduation checklist for more information.

Undergraduate Graduates

The Iowa Hawk Shop and University Bookstore is open and is currently accepting apparel orders along with other items related to commencement. More information can be found on the Iowa Hawk Shop website.

It is highly encouraged for students to go to the Hawk Shop directly at this time to avoid any possible shipping delays!

Attention for students graduating from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences: The Hawk Shop website currently lists only University College with the white tassel. That is the same tassel used by College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and University College wear the same apparel.

Apparel will not be available for purchase at the ceremonies. 

Graduate College Graduates

Graduate student apparel can no longer be rented or purchased online. The deadline for renting apparel was Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 10:59 p.m. central time. The deadline for purchasing apparel was Saturday, Oct. 15 at 10:59 p.m. central time. If students have questions, please contact Herff Jones at gradmidwest@gmail.com or 952-447-4449. It is the student's responsibility to return rented apparel to Herff Jones within one week of the ceremony. Apparel cannot be returned at the ceremony and must be shipped directly to Herff Jones using the prepaid shipping label included in the apparel box.

Apparel will not be available to rent or purchase at the ceremonies.

Livestream Information

All ceremonies will be livestreamed at the scheduled time and day with captions enabled. 

Every college will have their own commencement ceremony, tailored to their college and including messages from a variety of individuals chosen specifically to honor and address graduates of that college. Degrees will be conferred and graduates who are participating and have RSVP'd "Attending" will be individually recognized during the ceremonies. 

• The livestream is located on your collegiate ceremony page under the Watch Live section.
• If you start watching the livestream after the ceremony has begun, you will be joining the broadcast in progress.  
• If you cannot watch the ceremony during the livestream, the video will be uploaded to the University of Iowa YouTube channel approximately one week after the ceremony.
