UI cancer researcher James Byrne wins prestigious NIH Director’s New Innovator Award

James Byrne, assistant professor of radiation oncology at UI Health Care, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, recognizing his groundbreaking work aimed at improving outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

How UI Health Care is making it easier to detect cancer in dense breasts

Last fall, the UI Health Care Department of Radiology began using contrast enhanced mammography as a diagnostic tool for some patients who were recalled from a routine screening. UI Health Care is the only medical center in Iowa to offer this technology, and its care teams have spotted cancers in areas where a regular mammogram fails to detect it.

Chuck Long returning to campus as Homecoming parade grand marshal

Chuck Long first came to Iowa after being recruited to play football by Hayden Fry, and the All-America quarterback was part of the team that earned a Big Ten championship in 1985. Film based on Rachel Yoder’s debut novel allows mother to unleash inner animal

Nightbitch, the debut novel by Rachel Yoder, assistant professor in the Department of Cinematic Arts, was a critical sensation when it was released in 2021. Now, the novel has become an Amy Adams-starring film, which will be shown this weekend at the Refocus Film Festival in Iowa City and released in theaters in December. International Writing Program participant wins 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature

South Korean author Han Kang, a 1998 participant in the University of Iowa International Writing Program, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. Han’s work includes the 2007 novel The Vegetarian, which won the International Booker Prize in 2016 and was named one of the best books of the year by multiple publications. Han is the third IWP resident to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Experts to mark Civil Rights Act anniversary with event in Iowa City

Samuel G. Freedman, Columbia University journalism professor, and Norman Sherman, who served as Hubert Humphrey’s press secretary when Humphrey was vice president, will speak at the Iowa City Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. The two will discuss how efforts in the 1940s led to the accomplishments of the 1960s.
