2 faculty named University Distinguished Chairs

Stanley Perlman, professor of microbiology and immunology and Mark Stinski Chair in Virology, and Michelle Scherer, professor of civil and environmental engineering and Donald E. Bently Professor of Engineering, have been named recipients of the University of Iowa University Distinguished Chair. The award is one of the highest honors bestowed on faculty at UI.

Shepherd wins NSF CAREER award

Assistant Professor James Shepherd, of the University of Iowa Department of Chemistry, has won a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, his second prestigious, federally funded early career research award in two years.

 

Damage to white matter is linked to worse cognitive outcomes after brain injury

A new University of Iowa study challenges the idea that the brain’s gray matter is more important than its white matter for cognitive health and function. The findings may help neurologists better predict the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury.

Drug boosts cancer-killing effect of radiotherapy

A small, hydrogen peroxide-producing drug molecule that appears to protect normal tissue from the damaging effects of radiation may also be able to boost the cancer-killing effect of radiation therapy, according to a new study led by scientists at the University of Iowa.

University moves closer to development of former University Club site

Pending Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approval, the university will enter a development agreement with Des Moines-based company Build to Suit, Inc./Focus Development and Newbury Living to develop residential, non-student apartments overlooking Finkbine Golf Course.

 

Planning begins for new Student Well-Being Center

In a partnership between the University of Iowa Division of Student Life, Campus Planning, and undergraduate and graduate student governments, the University of Iowa is moving forward with a proposal to create a new Student Well-Being Center.
