College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Next Thursday, our clinics and college will be closed as we celebrate Thanksgiving. I appreciate the opportunity that this holiday affords us to express our appreciation for one another. I am grateful to be at a college that I love and an environment that supports a strong sense of community among our faculty, staff, residents, and students. I am grateful for the hard work that each of us put in to improve our care for patients, our education of students, our research and discovery, and our impact on our State. I am grateful to be a proud alumni of this institution, and I appreciate my fellow alumni who routinely give back to their local communities and to our college as well. Thank you! ~Clark Stanford

Research

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Lee H, Kengla C, Kim HS, Kim I, Cho JG, Renteria E, Shin K, Atala A, Yoo JJ, Lee SJ. Enhancing Craniofacial Bone Reconstruction with Clinically Applicable 3D Bioprinted Constructs. Adv Healthc Mater. 2023 Oct 31:e2302508. doi: 10.1002/adhm.202302508. PMID: 37906084.

Drawing from Kyungsup Shin's R01 research, the research team from Wake Forest, the University of Iowa, and South Korea have developed novel biomimetic bone scaffolds that are customized using 3D printing to the unique dimensions of a patient's bone defects, are biodegradable, and include a thick, porous external layer that promoted bone and vascular growth from surrounding tissues. Using this technique to fabricate bone scaffolds significantly accelerated bone regeneration over that of standard bone reconstruction strategies, even when the same material composition and fabrication method are used. Furthermore, because of their unique design as their close fit to the unique contours of the bone defects, the team saw uniform bone growth throughout the entire region in which the scaffold was implanted. This approach to bone regeneration is widely applicable to a large variety of craniofacial anomalies resulting from either congenital conditions or accidents.
