College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

It's commencement day! After four years of dental school, this part of your professional and personal journey is complete. We are proud of what you have accomplished. You have survived a global pandemic in the the middle of your dental education, and you are poised to make an impact on our profession as you graduate. My Iowa education made an enormous impact on me, and it still serves me well. As you embark on the next steps of your journey, we hope that you will carry your knowledge and skill in dentistry and your concern for the well-being of your patients with you.  ~Clark Stanford

Jarod Johnson

Always a Hawkeye: Jarod Johnson ('13 DDS) shares experience, advice on managing anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depression are common human experiences, and dentists are no exception. This phenomenon has become particularly acute over the course of the pandemic. Alumnus Jarod Johnson ('13 DDS) shared about his experiences with anxiety and depression and offered some advice that has been helpful for him in managing his anxiety and depression. Sharing one's mental health struggles is an important step in normalizing paying attention to and getting treatment for mental health struggles. Jarod Johnson models that well for the dental profession. Thank you!

Sara Stuefen

Iowa alumnae discusses the benefits of practicing in a rural community

Sara Stuefen ('10 DDS), a dentist practicing in Vinton, IA, was recently interviewed for an article from the American Dental Association Practice Transitions about owning a rural practice with all the benefits of an urban lifestyle.

Excerpt: After graduating from the University of Iowa, Dr. Stuefen wanted to work in a small town where she could know her patients and make a difference. “I know I flourish in a smaller environment,” she says. “I like feeling connected to my patients and being able to rely on myself.”

The 2022 Iowa Dental Association Annual Meeting (IDEAS) was held at the end of April in Des Moines. The University of Iowa held an alumni reception at the annual meeting, and since it was the first in-person annual meeting since the pandemic began, the event announced and presented numerous award winners, which included many Hawkeyes!

Why Iowa: We produce the best dentists

To the newly minted (later today!) alumni Class of 2022, know that you join elite company. Throughout Iowa's history, Iowa dentists have routinely heard from their colleagues—whether in the military, graduate programs, or private practice—that “we know you will hit the ground running because you’re from Iowa.” You are ready for this! Keep it up, Hawkeyes!

Social Shoutout

In response to hearing about Lynn Curry ('65 DDS) receiving an 8 over 80 award from the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, Elizabeth Karstens Faber added to a host of congratulations and kudos for Curry, saying, "Congratulations, Dr. Curry! You were instrumental in the success of Lifelong Smiles Coalition as well. Your service is appreciated and this honor is well -deserved!"

Collaborative and innovative research

Jain A, Schollmeyer A, Peter T, Xie XJ, Anamali S. Survival analysis of crown margin repair: A retrospective study in a dental school setting. J Am Dent Assoc. 2022 May;153(5):414-420. doi: 10.1016/j.adaj.2021.08.012. Epub 2021 Dec 29. PMID: 34973706.

For a crown with a defective margin, it is less invasive and more economical to repair it than to replace it. Jain and her research team evaluated the longevity of such repairs and isolated the factors that helped explain better survival rates. The team found that, over approximately a decade, just over 30% required further repair or replacement, and that repairs done with resin-modified glass ionomer or amalgam materials tended to have better survival rates.
