Collaborative and Innovative Research

Sorensen E, Pendleton CXie XJCorrelation in Dental Studies: Why It Matters and What to Do About It. Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants. 2023 May, Jun;38(3):417-421. doi: 10.11607/jomi.10285PMID: 37279223.

Statistical analysis in dental studies are affected by the existence (or lack thereof) of relationships between the data. For example, given the factors that result in tooth decay, if a person experiences tooth decay in one tooth, they are more likely to have other instances of tooth decay. In such a case, there is a dependent relationship between each observation of tooth decay for that person. Determining whether data is dependent (correlated) or independent is essential for properly assessing the data being analyzed. This article discusses how independence and correlations in data sets must be taken into account to properly assess the results and conclusions of a study. With numerous examples used to explain the concepts, and a detailed description of a hypothetical study, the statisticians show how assuming independence of data (when data are correlated) results in drawing incorrect conclusions from the data. The researchers described one method, “generalized estimating equations (GEE),” for addressing the existence of dependent relationships among the data. The authors describe how GEE differs from a standard logistic regression, which assumes the data are independent, showing how dependent relationships among data are more accurately described by GEE. The authors conclude, “For dentists and/or general researchers, it is imperative to know that there are a variety of statistical methods that have been developed to handle correlation in data so that one may avoid the potential consequences that come with an incorrect assumption of independence.”
