National coalition aimed at rural students doubles in size

The STARS College Network, of which the University of Iowa is a founding member, is doubling its membership to include 32 of the nation’s most prominent institutions. The network aims to help students from rural and small-town America have the support they need to attend and graduate from the college or university of their choice. In its first year, STARS opened doors to higher education for more than a quarter-million students.

UI study: Olympics silver medalists less happy than bronze medalists

From July 26 to Aug. 11, the whole world will tune in to the 2024 Paris Olympics, but some medalists will come away disappointed. In a new study co-led by Andrea Luangrath, associate professor of marketing in the Tippie College of Business, photos from previous Olympics show silver medalists are the least satisfied of all the athletes who reach the podium.

 
Sensor to be used in extreme weather study

UI receives $6M grant to study extreme weather in Midwest ag communities

The UI has been awarded a $6 million National Science Foundation grant to lead a multistate project that will help Midwest agricultural communities adjust to severe weather. The project — under the guidance of Jun Wang, UI’s James E. Ashton Professor of Engineering — will use a network of sensors invented by UI researchers to gather data for forecasts that can be delivered to community members in real time.

Neurosurgery at UI Health Care eliminates 7-year facial twitch

In 2015, John Mark Feilmeyer noticed an occasional eye twitch that eventually became constant on the entire right side of his face. After seven years of trying to eliminate the twitch, he visited neurosurgeon Patrick Hitchon and his team at UI Health Care, who were able to get Feilmeyer the care he needed. Limited Hawk Alert test will take place Aug. 1

Campus Safety will conduct a limited test of the Hawk Alert emergency notification system at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1. Hawk Alerts are used to notify campus about immediate threats — including extreme weather events, gas leaks, building evacuations, and other emergencies. This limited test will show alerts on digital signage and some UI websites. You will not receive alerts on your phone.

Registration deadline for grant writing workshop is Sept. 8

The registration deadline is approaching for faculty and research team members who want to participate in a daylong grant writing seminar sponsored by the Research Development Office. At the workshop, which will take place Sept. 20, you can learn how to tailor your grants to a specific audience and other “extra” things that can make a difference. Register by Sept. 8 to claim your spot.
