Dean's Message

Each year in June, we celebrate PRIDE with our local celebration held last Saturday. During the AIDS epidemic, PRIDE originally began as a expression of a community's commitment to one another in the face of great adversity. Whether it was being with someone you barely knew who was suffering alone in the hospital, looking after someone's cat after they had passed, or connecting friends and family to healthcare professionals who would have otherwise not have had access to tests or healthcare, a diverse and complex community came together to support one another. When you see rainbow flags and messages of PRIDE this month, it is an opportunity to reflect on the work of those still living and struggling and also to appreciate those who are no longer with us in the struggle. It is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to support one another with all of our diversity and complexity. This kind of community will make us all better people and help us become better clinicians, discovery researchers, students, and educators. Thank you for working to make our college that kind of community. As a proud Hawkeye, I know that's what we are striving to become. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Steven Levy

Dental faculty member serves on expert community water fluoridation panel for Health Canada

Steven Levy, Wright-Bush-Shreves Endowed Professor of Research at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the College of Public Health, is part of a 6-person panel advising Health Canada on allowable water fluoride levels for public drinking water supplies. This re-assessment process  is similar to what is done periodically in the United States by the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition to reviewing the extensive scientific literature on effects of community water fluoridation and fluoride in general, Levy was in Ottawa, Canada, June 7-9, 2023 for the in-person expert panel meeting. Recommendations currently are being drafted and will be reviewed by additional experts, then open to public comment, and then finalized and disseminated. Levy also participated in the previous Health Canada reviewer expert panel in 2008 that resulted in the 2010 Health Canada “Guidelines for Canadian Dietary Water Quality” document on “Fluoride”.

Incorporating oral health as a part of overall healthcare is a critical part of not only improving oral health but also healthcare more generally. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry has several initiatives collaborating with Carver College of Medicine to help medical students, residents, and physician assistants students to understand the importance of oral health to overall health. Kecia Leary, clinical professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, recently worked with physician assistant students as part of these efforts.

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Sherigar SR, Feine JS, Cooper LF, Stanford CM, Barwacz CA, McGuire M, Abi-Nader S, de Souza RF. "Can patients detect peri-implant mucosal inflammation? Results from a multicentre randomized trial". J Dent. 2023 Jun 15:104592. doi: 10.1016/j.jdent.2023.104592. PMID: 37330036.

This study examined whether patients self-reported peri-implant soft tissue inflammation matched clinical assessment of such inflammation for three different types of implant-abutment interface designs. The randomized clinical trial that the team conducted identified differences between the three types of interface designs, which are reported in the study, but patients were unable to perceive these differences. This evidence suggests that follow-up care for such treatments are needed even when the patient does not perceive inflammation or bleeding, since patients are unable to properly detect inflammation that could have a larger effect if left untreated.

Hawkeye trailblazers: Tracing Iowa's LGBTQ+ activism

Last year in Iowa magazine, members of the newly formed Hawkeye Pride Alumni Network reflected on the early days of LGBTQ+ activism in Iowa City. A discussion of this rich history, along with challenges that continued, was led by former UI Archivist David McCartney and Aiden Bettine, the former community and student life archivist at UI Libraries Special Collections and executive director of the LGBTQ Iowa Archives and Library. The article traces the history of the pride movement at the University of Iowa.
