David Schwebel named UI’s next vice president for research

David C. Schwebel, associate vice president for research facilities and infrastructure and university professor of psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been named the University of Iowa’s next vice president for research. He will begin July 1.

UI researchers uncover new understanding of sleep deprivation

New research from a UI Carver College of Medicine team — led by Ted Abel, director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute — shows a new understanding of how sleep deprivation affects each part of the brain. The work may lead to unlocking ways to mitigate the effects of sleep deprivation.

Whenever possible, the university continues to function during inclement weather, and employees are expected to report for work and perform their job duties. If there is a significant change to university operations due to extreme weather, the university will issue a Hawk Alert and post updates online.

If you are staying in Iowa City during fall break and want to celebrate with students and the campus community, you can take part in a free traditional holiday meal hosted by International Programs. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, with turkey, mashed potatoes, and other traditional holiday food. You must register in advance for a time slot.

UI Libraries event to discuss Title IX, impact of Christine Grant

Title IX, the landmark legislation outlawing sex discrimination in education, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. During this Zoom presentation, Iowa Women’s Archives staff Anna Holland and Kate Orazem will interweave the history of Title IX with the life and career of Christine Grant, the first and only director of women’s athletics at Iowa.
