Technology Changes and Upgrades

In the ever-evolving world of athletics, keeping up with technology changes and upgrades has become a sport in itself! Remember the days when our stopwatch was as high-tech as it got? Well, now our athletes are wearing GPS trackers that not only monitor their speed and distance but also provide them with personalized pep talks – "You're almost there! Just one more sprint and you've earned that post-workout smoothie!" And let's not forget about the latest in sneaker tech – these shoes have so much cushioning that our athletes are practically bouncing to the finish line like they're on a trampoline. With all these upgrades, who knows, maybe our athletes will soon be competing in holographic stadiums, cheered on by virtual fans who can't resist doing the wave in augmented reality. That said, here are some HawkIT technology changes you should be aware of.

Wireless Network Changes

To safeguard us from all the fake Gary Bartas (yes, they haven't retired) and the newly arrived fake Beth Goetzs, we have partnered with ITS to reconfigure our wireless network formally known as UI Athletics. If you haven't already, you will see three new networks in all athletics event spaces and offices. They are as follows:

  • UI-HawkNet - this network is similar to Eduroam, Athletic employees can access this network using thier HawkID@uiowa.edu and Password.
  • UI-HawkNet-Guest - Our new password protected guest network for media, visitors, vendors, etc.
  • UI-HawkNet-Device - Super secret network for HawkIT use.

In the coming week or two UI Athletics will go bye-bye. Any devices connected to this network will cease to function.

Fun Fact: Best Wi-Fi to connect all your devices to is Eduroam. Eduroam is a worldwide initiative, that has rapidly expanded throughout the research and education community and is now available in 106 territories. When you visit other academic institutions that utilize eduroam, you will automatically be connected to wireless internet.

Paciolan to use HawkID credentials

In the words of Michael Boal, "the tech wizards have done it again!" We will be integrating Paciolan (your event tickets sign-on) with HawkID and password, or as we like to call it, "one password to rule them all!" No more juggling passwords like a circus performer with too many balls. Attending our Hawkeye events is now as easy as ordering pizza – and just as satisfying. Implementation date to be determined but it will be within the next two weeks. YAY for 1% better.

Microsoft Teams to replace Skype for Business

I've got some news that's going to make your emojis dance – it's time for the ultimate showdown: Microsoft Teams vs. Skype for Business! The torch is being passed (or should we say, the pixelated webcam is being upgraded) as we transition from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams. Before you get too excited, this takeover won't happen for another year or so. However, as most of you do already, you can get a head start by slowing working in MS Teams.

Microsoft Teams is your central hub for many of the Office 365 products with an emphasis on teamwork. It is an app that helps you and a team/unit have real-time conversations using chat or video calls, securely share and collaborate on files, and attend meetings or plan projects with others using the various built-in and add-on collaboration tools. Teams has native access to many of your Office 365 apps including your Outlook Calendar, OneDrive, and OneNote. Additionally, there is integration with other Office 365 apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
