College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Our alumni are vital to the health and wellbeing of our college. We wouldn't be who we are without your support and your excellence. This past weekend, I had the privilege of seeing many of our alumni—over 50 alumni and friends—at the ADA Annual Meeting in Houston. It was a great opportunity to enjoy the company of our esteemed alumni and to hear about their accomplishments. Some photos from the weekend are on the College of Dentistry website. Iowa's Homecoming weekend is also coming up this next week, and there are numerous festivities planned, including our pediatric dentistry alumni reunion on Thursday night, an excellent pediatric dentistry CE course on Friday, and our pregame CE course and tailgate on Saturday. Please register to join us at the tailgate if you'd not already done so. Go Hawks! ~Clark Stanford

Addison and Reed Faldet

Recent dental alumni receive entrepreneur award

At its 2022 Gala, the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center presented a Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award to Reed ('19 DDS) and Addision Faldet ('20 DDS). The Faldets are practicing dentists, founders, and owners of Hometown Dental in Charles City, IA. In 2022, they constructed state-of-the-art dental clinics in Charles City and New Hampton. The new clinics are accompanied by new equipment and technology which enhances quality and efficiency of care, and allows the doctors to see more patients and provide greater access to care. The new clinics will allow the Faldets to address rural dentistry issues as dentists continue to retire in small towns across Iowa.

those experiences and ideas in writing, and to enjoy the creative process.

More details are available on the full flyer. Submissions may be made at any time before the submission deadline of November 6, 2022. Questions, comments, or submissions can be sent via email to Michael Tilley or Kate Newcomb.

Sam Christensen

Hawkeye Heros: Dr. Sam Christensen

Samuel O. Christensen (’55 DDS, ’58 PEDO) died at the age of 91 on October 16, 2022. Known as “Dr. Sam” in the Waterloo area, where he practiced pediatric dentistry until he retired. Dr. Sam was a quintessential Hawkeye—he appreciated the opportunities his education at Iowa afforded him, and it made a difference in the excellent patient care he provided and his commitment to giving back to his local community and his alma mater. In addition to his support for numerous organizations in Waterloo, he regularly and consistently volunteered his time and talents to the Center for Advancement and the College of Dentistry, which was recognized in 1994 as he received a Distinguished Alumni Award for Service. The photo shows Dr. Sam and his wife, Jane, at a Hawkeye game in 2021.

IMOM

Sign up today to participate in IMOM

The Iowa Mission of Mercy will be in Des Moines this year on November 4-5. Typically, the College of Dentistry provides a huge amount of support to the event on the Saturday, which will be Nov. 5. This event is a major public health event for our state, and it is a great opportunity for our students to grow and learn as clinicians while connecting with dentists from all over the State of Iowa. Faculty participation is vital so that students are properly supervised, and it is also important to have dental assistants, hygienists, sterilization staff, dental lab techs, and other support staff. Anyone interested in volunteering will need to register on the Iowa Dental Association’s IMOM site.
