Dean's Message

It was a joy to tailgate for the first time this season last weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of our alumni back today for our Olin Family Visiting Lectureship. But I'm especially looking forward to our Alumni Reunion weekend next weekend, September 16-17. It is my reunion year, and it will be wonderful to see old friends and colleagues and celebrate our alumni honorees. We hope you will join us by registering for our Alumni Reunion Weekend on September 16-17. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Akimasa Tsujimoto

Dentistry faculty receives Nakao Foundation grant to compare restoration outcomes for older adults

The Nakao Foundation awarded Akimasa Tsujimoto a $90K+ grant to compare outcomes of four restorative materials—glass hybrid, conventional glass ionomer cement, resin-modified glass ionomer cement, and resin-based composition restorations—among adults age 65 or older. In particular, the researchers are evaluating whether glass ionomer-based restorations may have superior clinical outcomes for this population than resin-based composite restorations.

Camaryn Mohan

The College of Dentistry welcomes Camaryn Mohan

Camaryn Mohan joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry as a dental assistant in August. Camaryn grew up in Clive, IA with her family, and she just graduated from Iowa State (we won't hold that against her!) with a degree in biology. She is living in Coralville now, and her parents met in Iowa City when they were in graduate school. Despite this, she says she is still very new to the city and excited to explore it. Please welcome Camaryn Mohan to the college!

Garrett Ormsby

The College of Dentistry welcomes Garrett Ormsby

In July, Garrett Ormsby began working as a research assistant in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. He is from Bettendorf, but graduated from the University of Iowa this past May. He is living in Iowa City, and looks forward to helping with pediatric dentistry research. Please welcome Garrett to the college!

Helen Ma's review

Kudos to you!

Helen Ma's review: "I cannot express enough thanks to the University of Iowa Orthodontic Clinic. I was a middle-aged patient and my treatment was challenging due to my alignment issues and my age. Dr. Southard and his team did a great job on me and I am very satisfied with the outcome. Now I can smile confidently because of them. Their expertise, professionalism, patience, and kindness made a great difference and I truly enjoyed my journey with them in my 4- Year treatment. They made my every visit joyful and worthwhile. Big thumbs up, University of Iowa Orthodontic Clinic!"

Journal of Dental Public Health

Collaborative and innovative research

Nguyen DP, McQuistan MR, Qian F, Hernández M, Macek MD, Chi DL. The interactive effects of oral health literacy and acculturation on dental care use among Hispanic adults. J Public Health Dent. 2022 Jun;82(3):295-302. doi: 10.1111/jphd.12529. Epub 2022 May 29. PMID: 35644999.

Although Hispanic populations represent 18% of the U.S. population, national trends indicate that untreated tooth decay is significantly greater for Hispanic adults aged 20-64 than for non-Hispanic white adults aged 20-64. Additional oral health conditions, such as periodontitis, are also significantly greater among Mexican American adults and other Hispanic adults than among non-Hispanic white adults. Part of this gap may be a result of differences in use of preventive dental visits among Hispanic and non-Hispanic white populations. This study investigated relationships between oral health literary, "acculturation," and dental care use. Acculturation is the ability of an individual to adapt to a culture of the majority group. The researchers found, contrary to their hypothesis, that Hispanic adults with high oral health literacy and high acculturation were not more likely to have used dental care in the past year than those with low oral health literacy and low acculturation. As such, it may be the case that other factors explain dental care use rates among Hispanic populations. The researchers did find that among survey respondents who completed the survey in English rather than Spanish (which could be a proxy for acculturation), those with greater oral health literacy tended to use dental care more so than did those with lower levels of oral health literacy.

1899 Iowa Hawkeye Football Team

Hawkeye Trivia: What year did the Hawkeyes first beat Iowa State?

The 1899 Iowa Hawkeyes were the first team University of Iowa team to defeat Iowa State after losing for the first three years of the rivalry. The score was 5-0. Here's hoping that the Iowa offense is more prolific in 2022 than it was in 1899. Of course, a win is a win! Go Hawks! 🖤💛🖤💛
