The University of Iowa aims to build on its existing reputation for excellence in three key areas: writing and communication, brain science and mental health, and cancer research and patient care. These areas will be the focus for future strategic university investments, cross-campus partnerships, and strategic plan initiatives.

Two new faculty members have been hired as part of the UI’s Transformational Faculty Hiring Program, which brings exceptional faculty leaders to the UI. Mark Burkard will be the new director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Martin Grace is a Tippie College of Business professor, Clement T. and Sylvia Hanson Family Chair in Finance, and faculty director of the Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance.

UI faculty members Lori Adams, Amber Brian, Jennifer Haylett, Jodie Plumert, and Rachel Young have been selected as faculty fellows for fiscal year 2025. The fellows will work to increase mentorship opportunities, develop tools to help leaders excel, and implement other initiatives to support the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan.

The Office of the Provost has introduced a new framework for assessing teaching effectiveness, part of the university’s strategic plan to support student success. Developed by the Teaching Effectiveness Task Force, this framework helps align university policies and practices to better recognize and reward teaching excellence.
