Fifty-two UI colleges and programs are recognized among the best in their field in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings. Seven of these programs received a top five ranking in the 2025 report, and the UI has 21 colleges and programs among the top 25 in the country.

The University of Iowa is advancing plans for a new, state-of-the-art Cancer Research Building, which will lead to significant discoveries in cancer research and address Iowa’s growing rates of new cancers. The university has identified Westlawn as the best location for the building due to its proximity to UI Health Care university campus and Carver College of Medicine.

A team of UI researchers, led by Mark Blumberg, distinguished chair in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, have partnered with UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital NICU staff to examine the sleeping patterns of premature infants. The study will look at how sleep, as well as twitches that occur during sleep, affect infant brain development.

After the UI Health Care Burn Center saw an increase in patients injured in house fires, a team of UI researchers investigated whether serious house fires in Iowa occur in the same areas and what factors are connected to the fires. Their study found fires mostly occurred in urban areas and that there is significant association between house fires and areas with low socioeconomic status.

In many rural areas, drivers can travel on highways for hours at night without seeing another vehicle. This sparked an idea from Qi Luo, assistant professor of business analytics in the Tippie College of Business, to dedicate one highway lane to semi-automated long-haul trucks during nighttime hours. Luo says dedicated nighttime lanes would create more efficient travel for all drivers.

The Office of Strategic Communication has launched a new photo and video library resource for campus, called Mediagraph. The new platform requires HawkID login and offers advanced search and filtering options and AI integrations. Virtual training sessions on Mediagraph will be offered April 17 and May 8, and you can register online here.

- 3 UI faculty honored with Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service: David Cwiertny, Steve Duck, and Travis Kraus are the recipients of this year’s Michael J. Brody Award. The award recognizes outstanding faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the university and the community.
- Tze Ning Hiew recognized with Ebert Prize: Tze Ning Hiew, assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy, has received the 2025 Ebert Prize from the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science for a research paper published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
- Edward Sander inducted as biomedical engineering fellow: Edward Sander, professor of biomedical engineering and Robert and Virginia Wheeler Faculty Fellow in Engineering, has been inducted as a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, which represents the top minds in the field.
