Dean's Message

As the end of the semester draws closer and final exams continue through next week, I want to remind everyone of the incredible journey you’ve undertaken. You’ve worked tirelessly this fall and now it’s time to showcase your skills. Think of exams not as hurdles, but as steppingstones toward fulfilling your dental dreams. Your dedication and resilience have brought you to this point and I have full confidence in your abilities. Balance your studies with moments of joy, laughter, and relaxation. Your success is the culmination of your hard work, so go into these last couple weeks with confidence. Best of luck to you all! Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Reynolds named chair-elect on Dental Quality Alliance

Assistant professor Julie Reynolds was recently elected as Chair-Elect to the Dental Quality Alliance (DQA), which is a unit within the American Dental Association that develops dental quality measures and advances quality measurement and improvement activities in dentistry. The DQA is a stakeholder-based group, with 34 voting member organizations participating. Reynolds has been the organizational representative for the American Association of Public Health Dentistry on the DQA for the past three years and will serve a two-year term as chair-elect in 2024 and chair in 2025. She has been involved in dental care quality measurement and improvement work for many years through a CareQuest-funded project to develop a Patient-Centered Dental Home that she co-leads with professor Peter Damiano.

Good luck, Lizzie!

Department of Prosthodontics Dental Assistant Lizzie recently moved over to Hospital Dentistry and Pros couldn't help but tease her with a sweet treat before she left.

Kudos to you!

Penny C’s five-star review: “My son had the best doctor and nurses when he got his wisdom teeth removed!! Quick and painless process! He had all 4 of them and they were all so thorough before and after his surgery. Plus, I received a phone call from one of his nurses, Becky, the next morning to check on him. I was very impressed. He’s my second son who has removed their wisdom teeth here and I already know when my daughter needs them out we will be going here as well.”

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Sukalski JMC, Askelson NM, Reynolds JCDamiano PCShi WXie XJ, McKernan SC. Perceived social status, socioeconomic status, and preventive dental utilization among a low-income Medicaid adult population. J Public Health Dent. 2023 Nov 15. doi: 10.1111/jphd.12588PMID: 37965907.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact that a person’s own perceived social status affects their access to and use of preventive dental care. As hypothesized, the study found that persons who perceived themselves as having a higher social status made greater use of preventive dental services than did those who perceived themselves as having a lower social status. One of the interesting finding of this study for patients with Medicaid dental insurance, perceive social status was more strongly correlated with use of preventive dental services than was socioeconomic status measures (i.e., education, occupation, and income). These findings suggest that a person’s perceived social status adds an important facet to our understanding of how social class, beyond mere socioeconomic status, affects use of dental care.
