The Office of Undergraduate Research is starting off its busiest season, we have applications open for Research in the Capitol, ICRU Fellowships, the Quick Pitch Challenge, and the Spring Undergraduate Research Festival. Our ICRU Fellowships are open for the summer of 2025 as well as the upcoming academic year; it's a great time to be looking ahead and planning next steps.

Academic year application deadline: April 11, 2025 | | Upcoming Presentation Opportunities | | | The Office of Undergraduate Research's Spring Undergraduate Research Festival (SURF) is held in celebration and recognition of undergraduate researchers' contributions to research, scholarly, and creative work at the University of Iowa. All students involved in mentored research or creative work are invited to present their work utilizing posters or other visual displays.
SURF will be held on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025 in the Old Capitol Mall.
Applications are now open and will close on March 28th, 2025- register now to ensure your spot! | | Are you interested in presenting your research or creative work? The Quick Pitch Challenge is a three-minute opportunity to talk about it! QPC is your chance to improve communication skills, present creative work, speak in front of an audience, and compete for prizes! Students from all majors and departments are welcome and encouraged to present!
QPC competitions will be held on March 27th and April 3rd! The first practice session will be on March 6th from 4:30 -6:20 pm in S181 PBB!

Registration Deadline: Monday, March 10th by 11:59 p.m. | | Congratulations to the DMA and EURA Winners! | | | Congratulations to the 2025 Distinguished Mentor Award winners, Dr. Marcia Lindgren of the Classics department and Professor Thomas Mira y Lopez of the Translation department! They will be honored at the annual award ceremony hosted by the Office of the President at the end of the year, to recognize their achievements. Learn more about these distinguished mentors here!
The University of Iowa has many outstanding mentors who support undergraduate researchers, as evidenced by the many nominations submitted by students this year! Without the dedication of UI faculty and staff mentors, there would be no undergraduate research. Many undergraduate researchers were nominated by their mentors during this round of applications, and the Office of Undergraduate Research is proud to support such amazing students! Keep up the amazing work! | | | The OUR ambassadors and staff passed out hot chocolate and stickers to over 70 students during the cold winter day, on February 14th during our Fall in Love with Research campaign! We had great conversations with undergraduates about getting involved in research from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., and told them about why we fell in love with research! Thanks to those who stopped by, and we hope to see everyone next year when we Fall in Love with Research again! | | In a recent article published by the University of Iowa, first-generation students who became involved in research through resources such as the First-Generation Brain Research Workshop, Iowa Sciences Academy, and your very own Office of Undergraduate Research were featured! We are so happy to be a part of the support network for students who want to be involved in research but need funding, resources, or a place to ask questions. Iowa Neuroscience Club-Brain Awareness Week Event
The Iowa Neuroscience Club is hosting an event on Tuesday, March 11th, from 6:30- 8:00 pm for Brain Awareness Week! Hear from Dr. Aaron Boes, Dr. Elizabeth Newell, and Dr. Matthew Howard in "A Conversation about Traumatic Brain Injury". Located in 181 North Room, IMU. RSVP here!
Latham Science Engagement Fellowship
The Iowa Sciences Academy (ISA) is seeking undergraduate students interested in research and science communication. This program is designed to enhance research opportunities and strengthen science outreach communication skills. Deadline to apply is April 30th, apply here.
1st Generation Brain Research Workshop
Are you a first-generation college student interested in getting involved in human brain research? Apply for the 1st Generation Brain Research Workshop, a free hands-on instruction that will show undergraduates human brain research techniques, such as EEG, TMS, and fMRI from August 19th-22nd. Research Supply Grant
The Office of Undergraduate Research and the Office of the Vice President for Research provide small grants of up to $1,000 to facilitate undergraduate research and creative scholarship. These funds are open for use for purchasing research supply materials as well as traveling to conduct research if the facilities or materials are not available at the U of Iowa.
