Did you know?

Marco Nino is a first-generation college student from San Dimas, Calif. After earning his undergraduate degree at UI in May 2019, Marco is now in his second year as a PhD candidate in biomedical engineering. He is also a graduate research assistant at ITI in the BioMOST Lab, under the mentorship of Suresh M.L. Raghavan, a professor of biomedical engineering.

The University of Iowa is recognizing first-generation college students this week, in alignment with the 2020 National First-Generation College Celebration events. First-generation students are those students who do not have a parent or guardian who completed a four-year degree.

Justin Torner, a UI photographer, and I, recently met with Marco in the lab. He was working with pediatric cardiology fellow Omar Abu Anza to conduct benchtop experiments using a simulator replicating blood flow in a constricted aorta. The testing, as seen in the picture to the right, is part of a study to understand abnormalities in ultrasound readings. He hopes in the future to lead a team in transformative medical device design.

"I am most proud of receiving the Carver Fellowship for my graduate studies," Nino said of the accomplishment for which he is most proud. "As a first-generation college graduate, I was able to show the younger generation of my family that obtaining a STEM degree is attainable."

UI student, future Air Force officer reaches for the stars

She knew the University of Iowa was where she would make that happen. It was ideal for Moore: a top-tier university only a short drive from her hometown. As for what that career would be, Moore looked to family members’ military experience.

The story behind connecting helicopter vibrations to stroke therapy

Connecting the vibrations from a helicopter to treating stroke victims may not seem like an obvious line of inquiry, but it turned out to be a promising one at the University of Iowa.

Q+A with Dean Nembhard

The Engineering Staff Advisory Council invites staff to a Q&A with CoE Dean Harriet Nembhard on Tuesday, November 17 from 3-4 p.m. on Zoom.

This is dedicated time for COE staff to bring questions and concerns to CoE leadership. If you’d like to submit a question that an ESAC representative will ask during the session, you may submit those to the ESAC anonymous suggestion box found here, or to the ESAC email, engr-esac@uiowa.edu. Submitting questions in advance is not required.  There will be time during the Q&A for staff to ask additional questions that weren’t submitted beforehand.
